Pat and Kate sorry you guys got eliminated from "The Amazing Race." Can you start off by telling me how you guys met?
Kate: We had about four weeks six weeks to get ready for the Race. The truth is we were pretty overweight. We were pretty out of shape. So the first thing we did was a personal trainer. She did as much as she could with us but there's not that much you can do in a month. She improved us greatly but that was about it. We tried to research various countries around the world and realized there's way too many facts to hit the books. That's not much that you can do besides get into cause.
Pat: We had done some traveling throughout Europe and we had recently come back from a move to Turkey. We had done some of it on tour and some of it on our own.
Kate: It's much faster. Obviously the difference is you're just speeding through. We were kind of rude in airports and things desire that. We would never push through airports in our real traveling the way we did in the Race.
Kate: Well we were certainly with them at the pit stops and overnight in Ireland and on trains and planes and like that. So just about as much as you see on TV. They were all quite wonderful to us. They kept calling us the ladies. That was neat. I'm sure they meant "old ladies."
Kate: The ability we have as rich Americans to hopscotch around the planet like that and to do something as crazy as this race around the world we have to appreciate that. We have to experience that as a real luxury and keep our eyes change state to how many populate don't have as much as we have. I think in a lot of ways it was being aware of some of the discrepancies in poverty, standard of living and justice in the world. We have those highlighted in front of those. Even if we play on "The Amazing Race" and acknowledge it we have to remember there's a whole other world that doesn't get to do things like this.
Pat: On the one transfer we're aware that we're playing and having fun. On the other hand we did have our Daily Office with us a daily reminder of how we're grounded and where we're grounded and the strength we had.
Pat: Spiritually in some ways it was transforming for me in the way I viewed myself in my mind. I began the race 40 pounds heavier than I am. I had this mental image of myself getting old. After that day climbing that hill. I realize I didn't have to conclude old. So I tell people I started the race 65 years old and I finished it 65 years young.
How'd it feel to have the hopes of so many constituencies on the Race? I mean you must have had a lot of gay and lesbian fans you must undergo had a lot of Christian fans a lot of women fans a lot of older fans.
Kate: It's a real leap of faith to put ourselves out there. We certainly don't have any illusions that we communicate for any of those groups. We wish that we represented those groups OK. ... But it's really an honor to do that. I'd like to say we entangle a responsibility to all those groups you mentioned and an honor to do this.
Pat: We consider ourselves a normal couple and to be able to show that all those things we went through we're just normal people.
It seems like you guys got to capture It and you were neck-and-neck with at least one other team and you were watching the father-daughter team squabble and had a reaction to that. What was going through your head at that point.
Kate: You experience it's not fun to see somebody else experience. It feels bad to be doing that. On the other hand it is a game and a race and it's like "Wow if they want to fight good for us."
Kate: We were there for a really long time. There was a man who was working there and trying to sneak some inside information. He kept telling us to go to the top. We listened to him. Twice he sent us back to the top. We trusted him. How do we know if we were supposed to trust him or not?
Pat: He thought he was doing us a favor. We made a bald assumption that he watched them put the bikes and knew where they were.
Pat: come up we've tried to carry out what we've learned on the Race about our ability to displace each other and give each other into our lives at home and for the most part we've succeeded. ... We realized that we really could be supportive of each other and it's our job to be there for each other. We got opportunities to talk about a lot of things in our relationship about our time together about what was important what wasn't important things desire that.
Pat: It's been nothing but pleasant. They're all disappointed that we're out. We feel like we let them down. But they've been excited for it since they open out. It was really hard. We had all that time where we couldn't tell anybody where we'd been or what we were doing.
Kate: It was really hard to not say where we'd been. That was tough. An interesting thing we had a family that was letting its young children check the show you know people call each other names and stuff like that. ... They were able to use the show as a teaching drive for choices we have in our lives about how we treat each other. We've got a whole lot of new people watching "The Amazing Race" from our congregations.
Pat: Oh yeah. Tons of people who are too highbrow to be watching reality shows. They were like. "Well if you're going to be on it we'll watch it. I don't know what it is but if you're going to be on it we'll watch it." And after the first episode they were like. "Oh wow that was fun. We can't wait to see what happens tonight."
Kate: We liked Lorena and Jason from the beginning. TK and Rachel are tough. And we love Kynt and Vyxsin. Jen and Nate could do come up.
convey you so much for showing what a great loving bring together looks like on the Amazing Race!!! I love the way you two talked to each other and supported each other. It is very obvious that your love is strong and you respect each other as human beings! My husband and I loved watching ya'll on the show. We were sorry to see ya'll get so early but you made a lasting impression. If there is a race or vote for Fan Favorite... you two will win for sure!!! Thanks again for showing such love and respect!! :)
You two seem desire such delightful women. In past seasons of "Race" my family has been very disappointed in the behavior of Christian racers; thank you for showing viewers the true spirit of believers. We were all really bummed when you were eliminated (I actually teared-up... giving my family years of teasing opportunities. I'm sure) and wish you all the beat together!
I loved seeing you guys in the go! I was sorry to see you have to leave so soon. I think its great that you challenged yourselves to do the race. Im sure your relationship was very strong before you both started it and I evaluate it is even better now that you experienced it. I loved the way you treated each other during the difficult and stressful moments. As I watched how the others treated each other. I was amazed. I thought you were the best couple! I think this kind of challenge really lets a couple find out the true meaning of working together. It was very obvious to me that you two respect and like each other which is more than I can say for alot of couples I know! My relationship with my fiance is very good too and I think that we would work together like you both did. It is so great to see a lesbian couple show the world that it doesn't make any difference who you are but that you can love consider and work together in a relationship. You are both "Amazing"!
