"Gear News Roundup" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:44:41

Skype accommodate has been all over the news during the past week. Here are some highlights from a few reviews and articles (as come up as a video): Martin cook from Computerworld wrote about his experience of using two Skype cordless phones at the same measure (well one at domiciliate and one at the office) for six months. He was using the RTX DUALphone 3088 (which just won the ; analyse shop ) at bring home the bacon and the Netgear SPH200D at domiciliate (analyse obtain ). Both connect directly to your router so you don’t need to undergo a computer on to use them. Martin noted the aspects he preferred on each phone (he preferred the interface on the DUALphone 3088 but the handset create by mental act of the SPH200D) and also a few shortcomings (the selection of ringtones on the SPH200D and the lack of a ‘favorites’ system in the contacts of both phones for easier dialing)—though overall he’s “very satisfied” with the phones. My parents have a Netgear SPH200D at their house and I undergo to accept that it’s a nice way to have Skype at home away from your computer (BTW it’s especially good now that’s I’ve got a as they can reach me whenever and it’s remove for both of us). Speaking of the Netgear SPH200D. Stan Beer from Australia’s iTWire this week that the SPH200D is a great solution for cheap calling for domiciliate especially on a Skype Pro plan (where most national calls to landlines are free and international calls to landlines are cheap). Stan likes the phone so much he’s thinking about getting rid of his landline. And in other Skype news. Larry Magid from CBS News does a nice overview of Skype (‘Skype grows up’) . He mentions the utility of SkypeIn and SkypeOut (on the plan). High Quality Video and the and the. And finally here’s a use of video calling on Skype I haven’t seen before. This American student studying in lacquer was able to check the Clemson vs. USC football bet this past pass through Skype and a webcam (pointed at his parents’ television). Nice. (If you haven't left a mention here before you may be to be approved by the place owner before your comment will be. Until then it won't appear on the entry. Thanks for waiting.)

"AMD vs. Intel: It's An Eternal Struggle" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:38:08

Like many others I was caught up in the air surrounding the "Thoroughbred" 0.13 micron AthlonXP based. I honestly thought it would carry AMD approve into the spotlight and allow them to retake the performance enthrone from Intel. However after playing with a I was brought approve drink to reality. Why would a shrunken core (0.18 micron Palomino to 0.13 micron T-Bred) improve performance by leaps and bounds? It wouldn't since AMD didn't add any features to the core. I was not a fan of when it came out about 2 years ago. I didn't like the longer pipeline which resulted in lower IPC each MHz could handle. Because of this the P4 had a very rocky go away the 1.5 GHz Williamette (0.18 micron. 256 L2 lay aside) P4 could barely out perform own Pentium III 1 GHz! Coming back to the present now with lots of software supporting SSE2 and with the introduction of the Northwood (0.13 micron. 512KB L2 cache) Pentium 4 things are totally different. Clock for clock the P4 is comfort not as powerful as the Athlon but it's much closer. Also thanks to the new core out's ability to measure high. Intel has retaken the performance crown away from and doesn't be like they'll be losing it any measure soon. "Ya. Intel has the performance enthrone but their CPU's run 700-800 MHz higher then AMD's! That's not bring together also you can overclock an Athlon to defeat a P4." First life's not fai r- that should be pretty obvious and so what if need to run 700-800 MHz higher in order to beat an AthlonXP 2200+ (1.8 GHz)? Faster performance is faster performance and Intel's wearing the enthrone at the moment do overclock well and they're more fun to play with thanks to the ability to unlock the multiplier but you can also overclock P4's. Almost all 1.6A's out there can hit 2.4 GHz without even breaking a egest and many even can do 2.7 GHz! With both processors overclocked. Intel comfort wins in terms of performance. Of cover AMD's saving grace has always been price. AMD based systems and CPU's have always been a much better value and they comfort are. This is a place where Intel is far and away way superior to AMD. Of course as they are a much larger affiliate Intel can contract more dedicated engineers to create by mental act cooling solutions for their CPU's - but have you actually looked at the heatsink/fan's that go with sell boxed P4's and ? The sell Intel heatsink is just designed so come up. Not only does it have a massive amount of ascend area to draw away the heat a P4 produces (highly clocked P4's can create change state to what high end AMD CPU's do) it also acts as a huge EMI protect! They're so good that even enthusiasts are using them to cool their overclocked processors! Another nice thing is just how change intensity the fan is. In an enclosed case it's often almost impossible to comprehend it. AMD could hit the books a thing or two from Intel on this of course though I do understand that AMD is much smaller and cannot apply their design's measure to designing exceed thermal solutions. They're moving in the alter direction though from those cheap generic heatsinks to Skive based models to now requiring heatsinks to have a coat locate in request to get AMD approval. One problem AMD has is actually not their fault. If you go to your local "mom and pop" computer hold on look at the AMD based systems they undergo on sale. Often hidden away in the specifications is the. You're more likely to get an OEM AMD CPU rather then a sell one because OEM's are usually quite a bit cheaper so what they do is just slap on some generic cooler desire the 6+ (I chose this cooler because a few of the local stores I frequent use this heatsink because of its low determine). Most of these shops also include secondary fans to back up keep things alter and again another fan add's to the decibel level. Another point to keep in mind is how fragile the AMD CPU is. When's the last time you heard of someone that killed a P4 or P3 with heat? Or maybe having a heatsink crush the core? Now think about the horror stories you've heard about from AMD based processors... I experience I remember! Yes there's a huge conspiracy against AMD and all the hardware sites are secretly being paid off by Intel to run "Intel based benchmarks", Most desire the MadOnion benchmarks (PCMark. 3DMark) have SSE2 optimization but is that cheating? They also have 3D Now! code written in them too! How about the notorious SysMark2001 with the Windows Media Encoder 7.0 not using SSE? AMD themselves stated that SysMark 2001 is a valid benchmark. AMD did channel a patch to allow Media Encoder 7.0 to use SSE but they liked the original SysMark 2001 because change surface without using SSE the Athlon scored come up and it showed off the mighty FPU of the Athlon. Quake III Arena does love the bandwidth available to the Pentium 4 it always has but that is something which is isolated to that one bet. Games desire Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Jedi ennoble II which use the Q3 engine don't show the same signs of loving the P4. I'm sure that's what a lot of you ordain be saying after reading this. No. I'm not biased towards Intel. I'm simply trying to inform out some facts. I don't love either affiliate. Intel or AMD but I do like them. They're good for each other. Just think about a world where only Intel or AMD exists. With a virtual monopoly on x86 processors who's going to stop either company from charging you through the look for processors? I actually desire AMD more then Intel. AMD seems to listen to the public on what they want and in general they usually do try and deliver. Intel on the other transfer seems a little more arrogant pushing things down people's throat ( + P3...) instead of listening. When people e-mail me asking about systems. I almost always tell them to go with an AMD based system. Why? AMD is and probably always will be a better determine then Intel. Value doesn't mean lousy performance either! AMD CPU's are damn fast and can furnish Pentium 4's a good run for its money but in the end P4's are faster! In terms of CPU "compassionate" Intel has this drink. Their sell heatsinks are designed very well not only to alter the CPU but the larger foot create of the heatsinks helps protect against EMI. AMD has a lot of catching up to do. They're moving in the right direction in terms of heatsinks the current ones bundled with the Thoroughbred XP2200+'s are a heck of a lot exceed in design and cooling capability then the ones that originally came with the AthlonXP (Palomino core out). AMD CPU's still have severe heat issues to conquer; even the Thoroughbred (0.13 micron) runs extremely high. At those temperatures it takes only a few seconds before the little processor dies of over heating. As an independent hardware tester and reviewer I'm quite offended when someone attacks my integrity. The benchmarks that are being used are not biased towards Intel just because they use SSE2 if I wasn't allowed to evaluate with SSE2 enabled benchmarks it would be like testing a car's top go without using the 5th or 6th gears. I'm not biased towards Intel but since with all the crap floating around I just wanted to try and set the record straight. This is more of a personal rant then anything else but hey. I'm also a consumer. Oh and just for the preserve. I undergo a friend that have a P4 1.8A which runs at 2.4 GHz on an Abit TH7II-RAID with 512MB PC1066 RDRAM and it's running faster (and quieter) then my AthlonXP 2000+ on an Gigabyte GA-7VA with 512 PC3200 DDR... for the moment that is.

"Synchronising NTP Servers to the GPS System" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:26:04

David Evans The GPS system is a worldwide navigational system operated by the US military. The system is maintained by USNO the United States Naval Observatory. The Global Positioning System is implemented from lay by 24 satellites in high orbit. Each air has precise timing equipment that can be used to triangulate lay for navigational purposes. Low-cost GPS antennas and receivers are now widely available and provide precise time and frequency information worldwide. This article presents an introduction to using the GPS system for computer timing applications. It describes the equipment that can be utilised to provide a precise measure resource for computers and computer networks. Each GPS satellite has a highly accurate atomic clock timing reference which can be used by NTP servers to come about computer networks. Each satellite continually broadcasts accurate time and positioning information. This information can be received by a GPS receiver and externally mounted GPS antenna. The timing information received is referenced to UTC time. The system is a remove to air function requiring no set-up or subscription fees. Many Network Time Protocol (NTP) server systems utilise GPS time as an external timing compose to come about Windows. LINUX. UNIX and other operating systems and communicate infrastructures. GPS is an ideal time and frequency source because it can provide highly accurate measure anywhere in the world using relatively cheap components. Each GPS satellite transmits a very low-power radio signal at two frequencies; L1 and L2. L1 is the civilian frequency band transmitted at 1575 MHz while L2 is used for military positioning purposes. The radio communicate transmitted by each satellite can easily go through material such as furnish and plastics but are blocked more substantial materials used in buildings. The signals jaunt by line of sight. The ideal location for a GPS antenna is on a rooftop with a good view of the sky. The radio signals can be received by a low-cost GPS antenna. The antenna is essentially a high obtain amplifier which is used to enlarge and transmit the weak radio signals drink a coax cable to a GPS receiver. The cable length that can be utilised between a GPS antenna and receiver is critical. The maximum hold that can be utilised is dependant on the gain of the antenna and the quality of the coax cable used. High antenna gain and high quality coax allows for much longer cable runs. GPS signal amplifiers can be fitted inline on the coax cable to boost the signal and increase cable length. GPS amplifiers are generally powered from the coax cable. The higher the amplification or obtain provided by the antenna the longer the telecommunicate length that can be utilised. Roof-mounted antennas can be prone to lighting strikes or other voltage surges. A lightning strike up to a quarter of a mile away can damage electronic components. Therefore it is recommended that a blow up suppressor be fitted. Lightning or surge suppressors are installed inline on the GPS cable and redirect any surge to hide. Various types of surge suppressor are available from gas discharge devices to solid-state multi-strike devices. GPS receivers rewrite the received signal from the antenna and give easily readable information in a serial change. Most operating systems including Microsoft Windows. LINUX and UNIX as well as measure server systems can utilise the time create provided by the GPS receiver for accurate synchronisation. Many different GPS protocols are utilised the most popular being NMEA. The NMEA protocol was developed by the National Marine Electronics Association. The protocol specifies a set of sentences that contain measure and positioning information obtained by the GPS receiver. The sentences can be parsed by a PC or time server to obtain accurate time. To summarise the GPS system is an excellent source of precise time for NTP server systems or for synchronising stand-alone Windows. LINUX and UNIX PC's. By using relatively low-cost components the Global Positioning System can give measure sensitive applications with precise timing information. About The compose David Evans is an experienced technical author in the telecommunications and communicate time synchronisation industries. hello! I'm planning to buy a new computer system basically consisting of an amd athlon x2 5200+ or 6000+ processor. 2 gigs ram small hd and dvd control i will run windows xp professional on that computerIt's going to be used for CAD-Programs (mostly AutoCAD 2008. AutoCAD Architecture 2008. explore SketchUp 6. Maya 8.5 and maybe also 3D Studio Max9) but it should be really cheap (500 - 600 euros - or 500 - 600$ as stuff is probably more expensive in europe) maximum for the overall system.. the pc would be about 370 euro that means there's comfort money left for a video card desire the ati X1950XT (256MB). ATI X1950 Pro (512MB) the GeForce 8600GTS (512MB). GeForce 7900 GS (512MB) or anything else in that determine be maybe change surface the Geforce 8800 GTS (320MB) if i decide the slower main processor... I've heard that i could mod some cards into professional ones desire Quadro or FireGL... Does anyone undergo any idea which mid be gamer card is the best one to mod? with "the best" i mean the card with a high probability of success after modding with a high compatibility to the programs i use and with good performance in these applications.. any suggestions any experiences?i hope you can help me out! thanks alex!comfort those car(d)s seem to be very slow! more toyota than ferrari.. is there a noteable increase in speed when modded into a firegl (not in games but in applications of cover)?is the gmini version also modable (ok i disbelieve that but who knows...)?how about the measure ati generation? are there modable ones amongst it? anyways.. good to know that there's at least one card that should be working.. did anone try it out or even benchmark it?greets blumentopferde how about the ati x1800xt?the fireGL V7300 is supposed to be based on it.. those cards are quite cheap on ebay and they outperform the hd2600xt according to some benchmarks.. is there a mod to turn them into fireGLs? how about the ati x1800xt?the fireGL V7300 is supposed to be based on it.. those cards are quite cheap on ebay and they outperform the hd2600xt according to some benchmarks.. is there a mod to move them into fireGLs? Yes there is a mod for them too but I evaluate that 2600XT will be a faster alternative. The absolute speed champ is 2900XT modded into FireGL V8600. It's change surface faster than the mighty Quadro FX 5600 ok i know it's becoming a monologue but... I've searched the forum for some answers and it seems desire the whole radeon x1800 x1900 and x1950 series can be modded into firegl cards somehow.. as those cards be to be faster than the hd2600xt / firegl v5600 im heading to get me some of these... but now.. which one is the best to mod? and is there a significant difference in go between the x1800xt x1900xt and x1950xt models after modding? is it worth paying 240 euros for a x1950xt with 512 mb ram or do i get similar results with a cheaper one (for example a x1800xt with 256mb is only 90 euros on ebay...)? Yes there is a mod for them too but I evaluate that 2600XT will be a faster alternative. The absolute go chew is 2900XT modded into FireGL V8600. It's even faster than the mighty Quadro FX 5600 thanks i was just writing my posting when you replied so i didnt see it.. so you evaluate the 2600xt ordain be faster. that would be nice for my wallet as it's cheaper than x1950xt.. but i couldn't find any instructions how to mod this model.. do you have any cerebrate for me? I've never done any modding before i don't change surface experience how to use riva tuner so there'd be no way for me to do it without instructions.. greets!blumentopferde mhhhm the cheapest hd 2900xt i can sight is 320 euros and then i'd have to get me a stronger cater supply which makes it as expensive as the be of the computer system I'm planning to buy.. but if it's really the beat grafics unit on the merchandise this is still damn cheap.. worth considering... Can someone please conform. Can only the DDR4 2600XT be moddable or ordain the DDR3 2600XT mod to FireGL too. Kindly help... sorry for updating this old go again.. i'm still not sure wheter i should get a 1800xt/1900xt/1950xt or a 2600 xt.. when modded into firegl all of them seem to have a very similar performance.. and they are all undergo similar prices (comparing a used 1800/1900/1950xt to a new 2600xt with gddr3)i wonder how it is with gaming performance.. with unmodded drivers the 1950xt's gaming performance is about 50% better than the 2600xt's... and of cover it's going to change magnitude with the softmod.. but is it comfort significantly better with a modded 1950 than with a modded 2600? i dont play a lot of 3d-games but if i can get better gaming speed for the same price I'd go for that.. and i really don't reach having two different xp setups just for the two games i'm running... if i would i would straightly go to the 1950xt.. and another thing:in the old 2600/2900 modding thread there was no comparison between a modded 2600xt gdd3 and a modded gddr4 model.. does it give a perfomance bring up to go to gddr4 that is worth the extra money? any experiences made so far?thanx blumentopferde Powered by vBulletin® Version 3.6.8procure ©2000 - 2007.
