"Kasparov in a jail" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 23:01:35

I read in Russian site that Karpov (WC #12) wanted to tour Kasparov (WC #13) in the jail but authorities did not allow him. Authorities did not accept him... There's no democracy with Putin just dictatorship. But (1) I don't live in Russia so I don't experience enough facts to say I'm sure and (2) I think one of the forum rules was not to discuss politics here I don't think Kasparov is waiting for Karpov's tour though. Kasparov depart chess and is barely interested in chess anymore (other than making money from chess now and then). I evaluate he would rather be visited by the opposition leader or someone else supporting him with his politics.

"Black's Requisite Defense Repetoire" posted by ~Ray

What are the absolute must-knows for a good transfer as Black? Sicilian and a good Closed Ruy Lopez are my cornerstones. However it hard to see which reply to 1 d4 is best. alter now I use 1. .. nf6 and either compete the Nimo-Indian. Gruenfeld or KID depending on their continuations. I'm sure there is no "best" reply to 1 d4. Rather there are many good openings to choose from. None of them ordain get you a win and none of them will make you lose. You get to do all that stuff on your own that's why chess is so great. If you be to go off the beaten bring in and also minimize opening preparation furnish some consideration to the Dutch against d4. Then it is you dictating the opening not White and you check the number of lines you need to master by a lot. The Ruy Lopez is something you should have mastered from both sides of the chess board. If you experience someone has a great game vs the Sicilian Defense as color why wouldnt you play the closed Ruy Lopez? Besides getting comfortable with such an analyzed series of lines as the RL helps act your play sharp. That's an interesting idea but the Dutch seems only fine and the fact that isn't highly played speaks to its dubious nature. I think I just need more practice vs d4 but I just don't know where to focus my efforts.

"A Little Chess" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:45:32

Work has been swamping my chess playing plan this month so there hasn't been much challenge to create verbally about. As these things go a little action often means mediocre challenge but I think I've learned some things even from sporadic and inconsistent play. I was color here and feeling pretty forlorn already. Clearly. I've lost an exchange and I was just trying to come up with a way of holding down the alter. Hence,15. Bd2? Nxa116. Qxa1 etc and I was playing to somehow not suffer. Soon after the bet the idea 15. Rb1! was pointed out to me by none other than BCC Master Riordan and I immediately protested that it lost the d-pawn. It must be bad alter? Ahem. compete might have proceeded something like: 15... Nxd4 16. Nfxd4 Bxb1 17. Nc3 Bg6 18 f5 exf5 19. Bxd5 Rb8 20 e6 fxe6 21. Nxe6And white is looking very happy superior development and open lines accounting for the material. Again and again I have come across this lesson - it is absolutely CRUCIAL in chess to be concrete - look deeper at lines that you want to reject instinctively and hunt for attacking patterns especially when things are going badly.

Karpov denied visit to old rival KasparovTue Nov 27. 2007 3:46pm ESTMOSCOW (Reuters) - Chess grandmaster Anatoly Karpov was turned away on Tuesday when he tried to visit and offer moral support to his old rival Garry Kasparov under detention for anti-Kremlin protests a Kasparov aide said. Kasparov is serving a five-day declare at a Moscow detention centre for leading a protest against President Vladimir Putin last pass. He is due to be freed on Thursday."He (Karpov) was trying to tour Kasparov but he was not allowed to do so," Marina Litvinovich a senior member of Kasparov's United Civil Front told Reuters."Karpov is a member of the Public Chamber (collective government oversight body) and has the alter to visit those detained. All the same they would not let him in," she said."Karpov must undergo been seeking to extend moral support or see the conditions in which Kasparov is being held."The United States and European powers undergo expressed concern at the Kremlin's crackdown on the protests ahead of December 2 parliamentary election. Karpov became one of the Soviet Union's most influential public figures after Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev personally branded him the "The Chess King" and told him "to direct the crown" when the young grandmaster became world champion in 1975. Ten years later his reign was over when he lost the call to Kasparov who confessed eventually that by defeating Karpov he was also challenging the old communist system and fighting for a new democratic Russia. On Tuesday the two men's personal ambitions and different political views seemed to matter little."A person is in trouble; of course I'm not indifferent to that," Karpov told communicate Free Europe/Radio Liberty. "In Russia right now we undergo what four world chess champions? And of cover the fate of any one of them is important to other chess players both in Russia and abroad."Karpov told the radio displace he must have spent more time at the chessboard with Kasparov than with any other player including a grueling match that went on for four months."Generally speaking. I don't share his political views but that's something different," he said. "I didn't come here to support him politically."Source: Reuters

LOSE WITH DIGNITY!(TM) - 2007 Susan Polgar© first I was looking for some sort of combination to win material or to mate. Win material was the right thread since after 1. Rc7 any move by color forces him to make a material concession. No good moves for color the color pawns cannot advance without being captured the black Rook too since the color f3 bishop is covering the a8-h1 diagonal disallowing the b8 cheat the mobility to the only two squares he can move to those are a8 and b7. This rook's mobility is such miserable because of the c8 Bishop who only has 3 squares to move to but alas all of those squares are controlled by White i e 1.. Bb7 2. Rxb7 and color is a piece up. The knight on e7 is also tied to its square because his job there is to defend the c8 Bishop. So. 1.. Nd5 will bring 2. Bxd5 exd5 3. Rxc8 RxR 4. NxR and the b6 pawn falls too. Last but not least the black king is tied to the defense of the e7 Knight. The only 3 squares he can move to leave the above mentioned Knight undefended. Great puzzle. Very instructive. CheersAbie

"A SHORT HISTORY OF KENYAN CHESS" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 18:16:27

As we approach the chess Kenya AGM john mukabi has gone drink memory lane to bring us up to go out with some history of Kenyan chess. Enjoy this wonderful reading from the beast. John Mukabi with Nigel short. By John 'the beast' mukabiThe association (formerly Kenya Chess Association) was formed some 31 years ago this month in September 1976. I was in primary school then!?1976-197?: An Asian descent man whom little is known ran it til late '70s. It is reported the association was too new to go to the Olympiad that year in Argentina.1979?-1989: Madan Gopal Sharma a famous lawyer. I arrived in the scene around 1982 to sight an aura of secrecy regarding who other officials were. It was like a "express secret". Clement Miheso and Alslam Adam (now in England) were visible "officials" in tournaments. Olympiad teams were handpicked from tournament results used to get airtickets easily & mysteriously through MG as he was known via FIDE and Kenya National Sports Council. It is said he was their lawyer. At the time Aluta Chess unify ( from cut aluta continua or "the struggle continues") came about to answer Nairobi Chess unify which was mainly Asians and Whites. Largest tournement was Pan Paper change state (now Kenya change state) brought by Nairobi Chess Club (1979-1992). Aluta brought in ART (African Retail Traders) Open 1984 to early '90s. The chess league was nationwide in Mombasa. Nakuru. Kisumu. Eldoret. Nyeri and Webuye mainly 1986-1990. Had about 15 teams mostly financial institions. So vibrant was chess that toournaments had upto 120 players. International Master Lodewijk Prins (Holland) a Hungarian IM and GM Jaime Sunya Neto visted Kenya for simuls between 1986 and 1989. Also former Junior British Champ Allan Baker came finishing 2nd behing Uganda's Emmanuel Kabuye. Juniors Peter Kihara and William Juma Arogo represented Kenya in Lagos. Nigeria with Juma coming back up!1989-1992: Clement Miheso came in with the Esso educate Championships which were in Nakuru. Mombasa and Nairobi. An annual event til 1993. As a result FIDE awarded Nairobi the African Junior Championship in 1992 and 1993. Aderito Pedro of Angola won the 1993 edition. Also in the event among Kenyans were Matthew Kanegeni and Evanson Mwangi.1990 saw Kenya play in first FIDE rated in Kampala where Lawrence Kagambi (show CK Secretary played). I got ELO 2215. William Juma again went for the junior event in Harare. Zimbabwe same year. Miheso began to get alter so much that he gave bouncing cheques to winners of Panpaper. Players camped at the sponsors' office. Panpaper withdrew for good! It so happened by then that Miheso controlled tip accounts of KCA. Aluta and Nairobi CC and reported to undergo have bought a car from one of the two FIDE events. He was kicked out by a landslide in 1993 elections.1993-1996: The late Tom Sagwe who was MD at ART and among founding fathers of Aluta took over. He was largely disappear concentrating on politics leaving all the spadework to his vice Francis Caetano Rodriguez. Kenya held and international 1993 Africa Juniors under new office and alongside it staged an International change state which was 1-2-3 won by Angolans among them IM Nascimento. I was sent to the Africa Individual Mens' Championship by KCA in Cairo. Egypt. KNSC supplied the airticket. The Panpaper changed its name to Kenya change state. The 1993 edition at Braeburn School had highest be of entries in East and Central Africa at 250! By this measure the Kenyan economy was limping while the Goldenberg affair (unknown to the public at the time) quietly went on. Sponsors were hard to go by. This saw Kenya desire out for the first time from the world chess Olympiads - 1992. 1994 and 1996. This culminated in the 1994 Kenya Open disappoint to act displace for the first time since 1979. However great cal-IBM Kenya change state of 1995 at The Grand Regency Hotel in Nairobi attracted about 150 players from Uganda and South Africa (Lyndon Bouah) among others. I recall Daniels Lauritsen taking part and he placed 2nd or 3rd. In 1996 the Kenya change state at Nairobi Gymkhana was won by South African IM Watu Kobese followed by compatriot FM Shabbir Bhawoodien.1996-1999: FCA Rodriguez was elected the new KCA chairman. Sponsorship was comfort a problem but after a lot of struggles. Kenya hosted the 1997 Africa Junior Championship won by 16-year-old Amon Simutowe of Zambia. The office experienced a number of scams involving the selling of chess sets literature and clocks donated by FIDE and the German government. Also the Indian Ocean Olympiad cheat where some officials and their spouses went to represent Kenya in Reunion or Mauritius!Meanwhile. Kenya was being represented in the Africa Individual Mens 1996/1997 by Humphrey Andolo the late Alexander Makatia. Joseph Kanyingi. Ben Magana and Kenneth Omolo. In bid to make amends the office managed to send a aggroup to the Olympiad in 1998 in Elista. Kalmykia. Russia. This was not enough to save them from wrath of players who voted them out in 1999.1999-2003: In came Lincoln Njenga elected at AGM after postponement due to membership crisis AGAIN! He started off very strongly only to fade off as usual desire his predecessors. First was to set Kenya Anti Corruption Authority (KACA) on the FCA Rodriguez and company on all assets with documentary evidence. FCA "submerged" change surface appearing to dress residence and recovery was in vain. It further emerged that previous office maintained oddly two bank accounts at Biashara Bank - one where the treasurer was a signatory and other where he was not change surface aware! Approximately KShs 90,000/= was withdrawn days before the AGM which threw them out. Anyway. Njenga's watch saw the highest prize monies in KCA's history. Started with the great Eldoret Open in 2000 organised in conjunction with Eldoret Chess Club. Top prize KShs. 40,000/= (was meant to be KShs 100,000/= but some sponsors did not honour assure). Then came the much talked about Tusker Malt Open by Kenya Breweries the same year in September at The Stanley. Top consider was KShs. 40,000/= though overall sponsorship was KShs 800,000/=. It was awarded beat organised tournament by FIDE with aggressive marketing in the create and electronic media banners on main streets etc. Opening ceremony featured dancers on a giant chessboard desire many Olympiads. Challengers divide was introduced to Kenyan chess. The Istanbul (Turkey) Olympiad of 2000 was partly sponsored by Kenya Breweries and for the first time in years no players were asked divide in for their airtickets. The Regional event in 1991 was the highest of cash prizes with top getting KShs 50,000/= won by Bob Bibasa of Uganda. The youth programes were revived for both primary schools and secondary with sponsors Athi River Mining Company (Rhino bind) and Fidelity Commercial tip for two years. Juniors were sent every year to world events as a prove. The national league which seems to have disappeared large measure with Miheso in early '90s was revived for one season attracting about ten teams. The Monthly Mug Rapids were also introduced but died out after months. Problems started when no study tournament was organised by CK in 2002 leading to agitation of the office's removal. Only four players were sent to Olympiad of 2002 in Bled. Slovenia. Rhino bind pulled out of primary schools training program etc. Despite being the first office to show fully audited accounts in the AGM of 2003 the gesticulate was too much leading to the new office being voted in. Again the membership problem surfaced!2003-????: Stanley.

"Simple Chess" posted by ~Ray

There have been a number of chess books with this call but for players of my generation "Simple Chess" by Michael Stean is the schedule of this name. I picked up a newish copy (2002 algebraic reprint) on my pass for a very reasonable HK$71.00 (a little over Aus$11 at the current transfer evaluate). The reproduce is by who have reprinted a huge number of chess books over the years. Thinking that this was a negociate price for a book I had a look at their website and to my joy undergo discovered that most of their reprints are this cheap. Most of the books would be less than $20 and although most of them (but not all) could be termed "historic" it is a cheap way to fill the gaps in your chess library. But back to Simple Chess. Here is a game from the schedule played by the author against Jonathan Mestel in the 1974 British Championship playoffs.
