Heard of the initiative? Probably but just in case here’s a summary. It’s a charitable endeavour to provide computers to children in developing and impoverished nations. The XO Latop is a bespoke and dirt-cheap machine (a of just $200 sees one sent out to a child in need on the other side of the world) designed first and foremost for learning but with the added benefit of being Oh and it plays games. A while back. Sims developers Maxis revealed they were working on a special version of SimCity to run on the XO. It’s ideal really - as well as being one of gaming’s bona fide classics its emphasis on statistics and organisation slots it neatly into the educational category too. Seems there’s been some progress as spotted by on the one of the programmers on the original SimCity. There’s a ton of information about it on the blog including its origins its future (it’ll be open source which hopefully means some fascinating mods) and how it differs from SimCity. I’ll leave you to read that in your own measure and move straight to the video of it in action: one to you for $399. The offer’s only open until November 26th and to Americans and Canadians only. Which is really annoying as I’d totally do it - philanthropy and gadgetfuntime for me in one neat package would make me a happy boy. Curse my Britishness. This is just a cut’n'paste off my blog post about it but wanted to share it here as well.————————————————————— Having done a fairly exhaustive project involving OLPC. I feel attached to any bit of news I hear about it. I never thought that I would be reporting on gaming-related news for the OLPC! I support the project 100% and want to take a moment to talk about it. OLPC is not here to simply deliever cheap laptops. The laptops have a purpose and a guiding principal. Constructionism a philosophy of education in which children learn by doing and making really sets the OLPC communicate apart from other cheap laptop projects. There are plenty of other companies setting out to prove they can make cheaper laptops. OLPC will always have them beat because of their philosophy instead of just trying to make the cheapest laptop possible. Currently the laptop does cost more than $100 to produce but the $100 tagline still sticks with the project. It is a goal and I fully accept they can achieve it. However staying under $300 ordain comfort be a great accomplishment. After all in a world where gamers throw down $500 for the latest video card. I can’t help but stop and admire what OLPC has done and will continue to do. Wow very cool… any word if this version of SimCity will be made available for XP? I always thought the original version hit the bullseye in terms of complexity level and seeing those screen shots leaves me jonesing to try it again. That laptop program annoys me. Surely they are in more need of fresh wet. Medical supplies and a stable education over a cheap laptop? Unless it can compete peggle? Then and only then is it more important than all the above…you could probably even add oxygen and sex to the list too. Thinking about it once they are plugged in to the internet and have a gmail account all the “meds” they need are there cheap as chips. NotArobot - that’s an awesome offer of you but bitter past experience of importing electronics from the US has me worried I’d have to cough up a fortune in shipping and import duties (UK customs charged me an $80 duty for a DS a while back f’rinstance and even threatened me with court action when I missed the single phone call they made to advise me they’d confiscated it until I coughed up) and I’m too poor to risk that at the moment. Many thanks though. Leelad - as Heartless_ above points out it’s about providing a means of education to kids lacking schools and teachers not about being a cheap computer to check your email on and play Peggle. "Tabula Rasa - PC - GR Review" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 23:07:17

I have long been fascinated by MMOs. I act to play them though I think they are or maybe some sort of neural parasite. To go out my favorite MMO has been and here's the big clincher that will probably tell you whether my opinion is meaningless or not. I hate. I don't mean that I didn't enjoy playing it - just that I thought would be a better way to pay my time. In comparison. City of Heroes engenders no desire in me for appendage chewing. So how does Tabula Rasa stack up? I ended up wanting to chew off only a toe or two probably one on both feet. You know to balance things out. With a label like 's Tabula Rasa written by Richard Garriott directed by Richard Garriott and made by Richard Garriott Productions you expect a fresh new be on MMOs. In terms of story and writing. Tabula Rasa gets off to a very decrease go away. The plot does begin to pick up but the way it’s presented is very wooden especially where it concerns symbols of magic which be like … I mean runic glyphs from ancient folklore. An ancient race of aliens seeds worlds across the galaxy with these symbols of magic that certain special humans (read: every player) can make use of. They have left statues around to explain everything which wrings out come up the magic of the plan. There’s no query no mystery no excitement – just a few bland speeches. Tabula Rasa manages to take a premise as interesting as unraveling the mysteries of an extinct alien race and alter it rote and boring. . The basic structure of an MMO is to drape a simplified RPG system on top of a real-time yet curiously turn-based combat system with some side-shows like crafting and god-awful amounts of crank-turning. I assumed that Tabula Rasa would be a low-grind action-oriented bet encompassed by a sweet candy bomb. Or at least an RPG system of some depth beyond “this stat makes you punch harder”. Tabula Rasa manages to get some of this right while utterly failing in other respects. Tabula Rasa has solid action gameplay with a lot of jumping and running about while shooting your guns wildly. It's a lot of fun for a while – then you'll begin to notice that aiming actually isn't important as every shot is determined by an underlying dice roll and all the walk action is about as irrelevant as the electoral college. Not having to aim and not being punished for moving is nice and all but they don't actually change much. You can do much the same in and City of Heroes. For cracker and mustard.

cater no nonsense boss. Mz. Towers and the friendly foreman who shows you around. Mz. Towers sets the goals and expects their successful completion. Both characters pop in with dialog to cause me to bruise me or to give a little comic relief. The foreman loves to request pizza while Mz. Tower questions hiring me. Usually. I’m too work to construe the dialog but it mostly repeats a handful of phrases. A level consists of a grid that varies in sizes. Some grids are narrow while others are quirky and beat of angles. A conveyor belt sits on the bottom of the bet screen rolling out the blocks for placing on the grid. These blocks range from one to four pieces creating different shapes. Not only do I fit pieces into the grid but also I must pay attention to areas highlighted in a specific color. Colors represent the type of building such as aqua for a shopping center color for factory green for homes and color for guard station. Sometimes I can’t express what color blocks belong in a highlighted area but the game doesn’t allow putting in wrong colored pieces into highlighted areas. Mz. Towers might give orders where you must create a 2×2 police station or a 3×3 hospital. I’ve blown that a few times especially when there were no highlighted areas. Since the conveyor belt stops for no one. I conclude like Lucy at the dulcify factory when trying to manage pieces that I forget about the objectives leaving no room to create a 2×2 or 3×3 building. Sometimes I be to throttle the grid or Mz. Towers but it’s all in fun as offers a diversity of challenges. The bet contains two types of cater ups. One affects items on the conveyor sing and the other affects pieces. The latter power ups include a tractor for destroying buildings to make dwell for more a recycler for changing the cause of an existing piece and a cast aside bin for recycling pieces (This is a very color company!). Conveyor sing cater ups appear just below the belt (OK. I can just hear the quips flying). Dynamite blows away all pieces currently on the sing. Spray paint randomly changes the color of the current pieces. Other power ups include freezing the conveyor sing for a few seconds reversing the conveyor belt and (my favorite) the beat for converting pieces into one-block pieces. Some levels fail me with power ups while others undergo me dying for one or the right one. My favorite part is the mysterious “special building.” Its brown pieces only come in single blocks. When all the blocks alter in the highlighted space the building materializes and angels sing its praises. These special buildings should come along more often. Due to the randomness of the pieces it’s easy to get trapped and replay a level a few times. The bet takes luck and strategy brings out all kinds of emotions from euphoria in finally making through a tough aim to aggravation in watching your sing fill up with no help in sight. The second bet mode untimed requires reaching a specific advance rather than completing objectives. I don’t care for this mode especially since I could not act go level 3-4 even after reaching the minimum advance many times. Story mode is the stronger of the two but I query if I would be to compete the game again once I end it. With ’s having an arcade element it should be possible to act an arcade version without a story. I ran into a technical glitch where the game freezes when the puzzle pieces cover all of the squares. Other than that. ’s colorful cartoon characters and upbeat music give it a neat spin on Tetris while bringing something novel to the casual games arena.
