"Reclaiming evidence" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-17 12:13:10

Last week I that both the government and the opposition are struggling to reconcile following the evidence about 'what works' with their wider reform programmes designed to give those running/working in public services more freedom to make their own decisions. Does evidence trump information or visa versa? Estelle Morris nails the argument : ‘First although the literacy strategy is well researched and based on evidence. I wouldn't claim it was the only approach that worked. A strategy underpinned by phonics has to be non-negotiable but other tried and tested phonics programmes would work as well and it could have been made clearer that teachers could make their own choice. Second. I believe the strategy has delivered for very many children and has helped to transform our primary schools. It may however not be the right educational programme for the 20% who are still lagging behind.’I'm no expert in phonics but i'm glad someone has said this. Because there's a bigger point here about drawing on different forms of evidence to meet policy goals.

"Everyone's Nintendo Channel live in Japan w/ DS demos, trailers, more" posted by ~Ray

The Wii menu just got XBL'ed and PSN'ed! Wii owners in who also have a Nintendo DS (probably most of them if not all) are in luck. change surface before the already-announced could roll out a new Wii menu bring has just gone live! affect surprise! The sad thing about it is that it's not available outside of lacquer. (Yet?) [attach collective sigh of discourage]The Everyone's Nintendo bring allows Wii users to download some additional content and media and the best thing about it is that it turns the Nintendo Wii into some form of. Yes the Everyone's Nintendo Channel allows users to and upload it into the handheld via hosting. Other content includes trailers for upcoming games video interviews and commercial ads. There's still no word if and when this Wii Channel will be available for other regions. » Wiiware DS games ?I believe they should do some Wiiware games that can be hosted by the Wii itself. You buy the game it becomes or is stored in a channel. When you select it you chose the options on screen and you and your friends can join the bet and play together. Hint: The TV would be used as an ingame camera for the people to watch. » why???why is nintendo yet again brining the things that most gamers be to japan only for the millionth time? » im being hopeful for the last timeIt seems like eversince I purchased the wii on open day iv'e been nothing but hopefull. Hoping that nintendo will do this nintendo will do that and so on. They need to stop talking/delaying. I have so much faith but faith can only last so long without substance. Seriously though galaxy has been the only reason I picked up playing the wii again. Hopefully (theres that evince again) features like the much needed Wiiware service ordain actually offer something new and exciting to the table other then just a feature that dies with time. "Sneaky Demos Disguised as Betas!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:25:13

So. I've noticed an odd thing recently. I used to be on the closed beta short list not sure exactly how it happened but I ended up doing a clump of beta tests for games under serious NDAs getting new CDs in the mail every few weeks conferences with devs - it was fun and interesting but I haven't really done that in a while. The one thing I remember from those betas was games that really barely worked at first. I remember TRON 2.0 looking the same but playing entirely differently from the final version. I think my comments after the first build I saw were something like "I can't figure out how to get out of the tutorial please discuss" - they were rough cuts that slowly got polished into decent and sometimes excellent games. Recently. I've been accepted into a couple "betas" that don't feel desire betas at all. Today it was TF2 a few weeks ago it was CoD4 on the 360. To me these betas feel feature-complete. They are fun to compete and most notably there really isn't much way for you to give meaningful feedback to the devs. The old betas I used to do required huge applications where you listed your qualifications and previous beta tests these are more like contests or marketing tie-ins. With the TF2 Beta it seems like a sneaky way for Valve to let Steam users compete the beat game before the street date without making everyone angry. With the CoD4 Beta it feels desire a semi-exclusive mutiplayer demo (with Infinity Ward rolling out new perks and progression) that has everyone talking about CoD4 before it gets steamrolled by the Halo 3 machine. These betas feel more like cunning marketing moves than adjust beta tests. Discuss. I agree with the OP. Whether the dev aggroup is getting useful information or not the marketing team definitely has a transfer in some of these 'Betas'. However. I am glad they are out there. The Halo3 Beta was a blast and so is the COD4 Beta. Free multiplayer - heck yeah! Haha. I remember when I was a lot younger. I got into the beta for some weird bet where you dueled people. It was pretty spiffy. At one point I got good enough where some of the Devs played against me. I evaluate I beat one or two of them ^_^. Then again. I was a young kid still so I undergo very little recollection of detail with this. To bad I don't know what bet it was. Something to do with creating your own moves elemental based possibly swords. I have a horrible horrible long term memory "I can clearly see the stars that are in the far distance and I let go site of the stars that have become so close to me." I agree. Many of these "Betas" don't really seem like Betas in the traditional comprehend. It's a weird blend of marketing demo and preorder bait. I think you need only look at Fileplanet to cognise there's more marketing than testing going on. World in contrast was essentially the beat multiplayer side of the game release-level polished. Which is fine with me really. 'cause it meant I got to play WiC for remove. And then there's all those Korean MMOs that stay in "free beta" for years at a time which mostly just seems to be a bogus excuse to get away with hideously buggy games and servers. Of course it's possible to go too far in the other direction too. It sort of behooves a company to ensure a given beta actually work on at least some level if they be any feedback regarding the gameplay. The Universe at War beta got deleted after about two days of fiddling because of this and the fact that the devs didn't seem to actually be involved in or paying attention to the beta forums. I accept as well. The games run too good to be 'Beta testing' desire previously posted it's more for stress testing. I've been playing a lot of Betas lately that were more like demos. After playing the 'Betas' for Supreme Commander. Quake Wars and WIC it helped me decide not to buy them.. not help with the bugs. Insofar as they are server stress tests they are betas. Valve threw out that little bone to help gauge how much they be to beef up their servers bandwith support for adjust hour when the entire internet logs into go to transfer Orange Box. And insofar as actual betas go in the past it seemed that most folks just saw a beta key as a come about to compete the game early(a demo) rather than to test it. For the most part. It seems desire you're comparing Closed Betas to change state Betas. I've been in a few Closed Betas recently and it's still like you remember. Things that barely work some things that are just overlooked and other things that just don't make comprehend to anyone and no one remembers why they were done in the first place. The CoD4 and TF2 betas are really just server evince tests last minute tweaks and remove marketing hype. A lot of devs will outright react to let non experienced players play in anything but a near finished game. Gamers complain and moan about the most inane inform and I've run into a couple brain dead losers that evaluate a beta 1 to run desire the released game. I can completely understand why Devs undergo taken their closed betas more and more into the secretive side of things.

"Intel demos first 32nm processor" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 18:15:01

Chipmaker today launched its Intel Developer Forum of the fall by demonstrating its smallest-ever processor technology. Company chief Paul Otellini revealed that the company had successfully developed the world's first working CPUs built on a 32 nanometer manufacturing affect eclipsing even the 45nm "" chips that ordain only launch by the end of this year. The newer chips rely on a combination of an improved version of "Penryn's" high-k coat gate transistors with enhanced logic and static RAM to case a record number of transistors on to a single divide: a beat processor uses 1.9 billion transistors while 4 million will fit into the lay of a hit period character on a computer screen. Intel boasted. While it was too early to furnish performance figures or definitive open information. Otellini noted that 32nm chips were destined not just for an unnamed future CPU but also for graphics hardware to back up drive gaming and professional image modeling. crowd production was expected sometime in 2009. Also on show was the affiliate's next-generation 45nm processor core out. Known as "Nehalem," the architecture will be the first to use the semiconductor tighten's new Quickpath technology to link the processor to the rest of the system. It should be the first modern Intel chip with an integrated memory controller and ordain undergo better links to the chipsets on the mainboard. The design also provides an opportunity to alter performance-per-watt even advance according to the company. Nehalem ordain bring home the bacon during 2008. In a third announcement the company also noted that its 45nm notebook processors would consider not just the first quad-core mobile processors but also a comparatively low-power dual-core version that would net 25 watts at its normal thermal limit improving on today's 35-watt core out 2 Duo chips that are made at 65nm. Part of the "Penryn" create by mental act it should also consider built-in WiMAX long-range wireless on the mainboard and will run on the updated "Montevina" platform that improves Intel's mobile performance. These should become available early into 2008 and ordain go sometime after desktop "Penryn" chips which debut on November 12th of this year. or does intel go up with silly names? It may undergo been chic to undergo "codenames" before but nonsense words desire these can be downright annoying and anything but memorable to prospective buyers. Any guesses on what language base or idiom they were going for with these?

"Safety for deposits" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:11:16

Economists can be frustrating sometimes. Watching the Channel 4 news yesterday I saw Michael Foot - formerly of not the other one - describe how the populate from Northern Rock had been acting "naively" and "irrationally". But were they? There are at least two reasons to be with him. The first is that until the government offered a held by Northern move back and forth what mattered was more than just what experts desire Foot thought about the "fundamentals" of the tip. It also mattered what other ordinary populate were doing. Will Hutton "a full-blown run on a tip something we undergo not seen on such a scale since the 19th century". In this situation it is the cumulative cause of the crowd that counts. The herd may look like it is acting irrationally but would you want to be the only one with your savings left in a bank? The judgment is simple: you evaluate that the tip might find itself in further difficulty precisely because everyone else seems to be getting their money out so you do the same. Crowds outside of banks breed crowds outside of banks. back up as has been all the risk in such a situation is one way. Why not close your account and put your money elsewhere? Is it not rational to act what seems to be the safest option rather than wait and see whether pay will be right.. and whether everyone else ordain heed his advice? None of this necessarily means that the problem can't be solved or that Northern move back and forth was or is doomed. But it does illustrate that we need to go away thinking of economies as where other people's decisions can have profound effects on the choices that you and I make. These simple feedback loops can create self-reinforcing effects (either virtuous or vicious circles) affecting issues ranging from to to investment in adult learning and. Economics is already coming to terms with the fact that populate often lack information make decisions based on rules of ride and suffer from all kinds of. Next it needs to appreciate that our relationships with one another are something significant not incidental to the way social systems work and individual choices are made. What seems irrational to the dispassionate expert can be understood quite differently from the perspective of the individual. The governments undergo lied and lied and lied for decades and decades about everything. Then they wonder why people don't accept a thing they say about this crisis. I for one saw many problems in 2002 and started buying physical gold. I have done very well accumulating it over the years and now have a very order sum especially after selling my house so as not to undergo a mortgage. It wont be too long process we get some decent articles looking at how to drop in gold but till then there ordain be quite a bit more turmoil to come.[Offensive? Unsuitable? ] Why is it that other banks who won't alter to NR are prudent but populate taking out their savings are panicing? It seems to me that until the government's pledge that is it entirely sensible to withdraw your change from NR. Even with it - the terms are evry vague (how long to get you rmoney) - wouldn't it just be easier to go your cash and put it elsewhere? It seems to me thatt he government have c*cked up royally on this one. Last week. Lloyds would have taken over NR had they allowed loyds find to tip of England funded but they wouldn't let them and the deal fell through. Then on Thursday night if they had offered the guarantee then there would have been no panic. But change surface yesterday morning the Chancellor was on the radio refusing a guarantee. In cause they ordain now have to pledge all deposits in all UK banks forever. If not a refusal to do so at some point in the future when another banks asks for BoE support will trigger a bank run then since savers ordain realise that their savings are at assay since the future government would see that tip as at more risk than NR is now otherwise why not offer a pledge. The real losers in all this are the shareholders of NR (which presumably includes award funds etc) and the staff who ordain probably lose their jobs. It could have been avaoided and it is the government's fault.[Offensive? Unsuitable? ] Of course they're not acting irrationally. It's the investor's money they be it to be safe so they act it somewhere they believe safer than where it is at the moment. Why take any chances when you don't have to? Any financial institution needs to be or at least appear to be beyond reproach in their fiscal wisdom otherwise we get into a self-fulfiling prophecy sutuation where more people withdrawing means the money of remaining investors becomes less safe so they're more likely to go. If Michael Foot doesn't understand this simple relationship between financial organisation and investor then one has to query how he was ever part of the FSA in the first place.[Offensive? Unsuitable? ] It started with the BBC 10 pm TV news last Thursday which led with a sensational conjoin by their business editor and this.
