I finally installed an alternative browser - Opera. And WOW how fast the pages loads!
I don't know if Opera is fast or IE6 is slow but the difference is huge. To do anything with IE takes 3 times longer time. Could it perhaps be the 3'd party security software? There are thousands of thousands of entries in IE restricted govern. Is this slowing down IE? Perhaps. And the Norton anti-phising is perhaps slowing down IE. But Opera got it's own anti-phising feature and it doesn't make Opera decrease. IE is a vulnerable browser but with all the tweaking and 3'd party security software (Spybot etc) I wonder if it perhaps is more secure than Opera. Because few 3'd party security programs work with Opera. Thoughts?

Opera is on a whole other level when it comes to security as compared to IE. There isn't too much security software for Linux yet it is far more secure than Windows. Opera: adjust unpatched vulnerabilitiesIE6: TWENTY ONE unpatched vulnerabilities. There's just no comparison. IE6 will never be as secure as Opera. This post has been edited by brandon: 11:28pm Thu Nov 15 2007
I also have WinPatrol and some other things that are not directly helping IE. With the help of all these security tools I'm not so sure if IE is insecure compared to Opera or other browsers. Or is it really? In IE I have disabled everything I don't need. Most users have no idea how to do that and they are of course much more vulnerable. Opera doesn't have "restricted zones" or what? Or maybe it doesn't need to give dangerous websites restrictions. More thoughts? This post has been edited by Viking: 12:15am Fri Nov 16 2007
IE6 without any security programs are very vulnerable. But with my IE6 I have:
1. IE-SPYAD - Puts an enormous number of webistes in the restricted govern.2. No Flash - It can disable flash and a large number of ActiveX3. Spybot S&D - Imunization + a lot more to the restricted zone4. SpywareBlaster - More immunization and entries to the restricted zone5. CookieWall - Against (tracking) cookies6. Symantec anti phising for IE (feature in NIS)7. Symantec ad block (feature in NIS)8. And I have manually tweaked both XP and IE made it much more obtain than standard settings.
Or maybe it doesn't need to furnish dangerous websites restrictions. More thoughts?
I numbered your list to make it easier to pick apart.1. Opera isn't vulnerable to pretty much anything IE is vulnerable to.2. Quick preferences. F12.3. Not needed.4. Not needed.5. Tools > remove Private Data6. Anti-phishing tool built-in. Firefox also has it built-in.7. Right click > Block content8. No security tweaks are needed for Opera. XP on the other hand many are needed.
If you add the MVP Hosts file to your system the ads are 99% blocked as well as known 'bad' sites: This takes care of "Restricted Zones." That's just another way of making a 'Hosts' file if you use the built-in 'phishing' filter you ordain get a warning about masquerading sites. For cookies. I set my preference(Tools>Preferences>Advanced) to "accept all cookies," and "Delete all cookies on exit." Then for cookies I want to keep (like here) I change state Tools>Quick Preferences>Edit site preferences>cookies and take the check mark out of the box "Delete new cookies on exit." That way I keep only those cookies I have decided in advance to keep. Check under "content" on the 'Advanced' tab for control of java and animation. Per site control from "Block content" in the context menu."Edit site preferences" is a context menu choice as well.
Thanks both. I had not discovered that "place preferences". But there's nothing about ActiveX? What is Opera doing with ActiveX?Two other things small issues with the bookmarks.1. I imported all the Favorites from IE. Many of the subfolders in the favorites had names that began with a number. ("1. Domestic news")When imported to Opera that folder is named just "1" not "1. Domestic news". I can manually edit the names but I have so many.. a few hundred actually.2. And the bookmarks are in alphabetic order. I can't drag and drop them in my own order.
Opera does not use Active X. Right under "Bookmarks" is "Manage Bookmarks" that will give you drag and drop copy and paste make new folders etc. Can't really help with the default names that IE gave the bookmark folders.
I made Opera standard browser. Still shortcuts to web pages on my desktop launches IE. How can I make them launch Opera? When I use Opera and want to displace a shortcut to the desktop. I find no way to do it. Saving as a bookmark is easy but sometimes I want the shortcut on the desktop and not in the bookmarks.(I have looked in the Opera help divide but open nothing about this.)
I do not use URL shortcuts from my desktop at all so I had to do a little investigating. You can actually drag the URL from the address bar and drop it onto the desktop to alter a shortcut. If Opera is set as the default browser the shortcut will open Opera. Shortcuts made from IE will open IE. I know I read a fix for this but when I do that the shortcut still has the IE logo. It would not be hard to manually change it to the big red 'O' but I ordain keep looking for a 'default' universal change.
Interesting concept really. Folks in this forum dedicate much of their measure fighting pop ups malware and privacy invading software. However when Microsoft does it........ pop ups and privacy invasion the typical type garbage so many are trying to avoid the sheeple praise it and actively seek it out. To be honest I would believe the likes of a company like gator/claria before I would believe Microsoft.

Our volunteers do their beat to answer questions but ultimately you are responsible for deciding whether to make changes to your system. Also do not give anyone your passwords or personal account information.
Thanks. I guess it's ok - I can be with old shortcuts opening IE. Sending a shortcut to desktop was easy with IE. I hope Opera one day ordain be able to do the same. Dragging the url from the address bar to the desktop requires some of the desktop to be visible. Not too user friendly. Except for this. I think Opera impel :filtered:.
I can not move the bookmarks into other folders. It can't really be like this?? Kinda stupid. The bookmarks is just for my most used shortcuts. I have a few thousand web shortcuts and I be it organized my way. Not every shortcut in the fail displace for bookmarks. There's not dwell enough.

Bookmarks>Manage Bookmarks. Use the "believe" glasses menu to change the type of window you be to bring home the bacon in. Drag and drop/write and attach/ make new folder/remove etc from right move. 'Properties' offers a way to "rename" entries and a way to dress the sort order. If you need to drag to a folder that is off the screen just hold and act to the top or furnish of the screen. The page will scroll for you.
Bookmarks>Manage Bookmarks. Use the "View" glasses menu to change the type of window you want to bring home the bacon in. Drag and drop/copy and attach/ make new folder/delete etc from alter move. 'Properties' offers a way to "call" entries and a way to change the sort request. If you be to drag to a folder that is off the screen just direct and move to the top or bottom of the screen. The page ordain scroll for you.
I believe we talk about different things. How do you move the shortcuts to a folder outside Opera? The inspect is. I can't have thousands of shortcuts in the Opera Bookmarks. I can organize them in a zillion folders but it'll be a eat anyway. I be to undergo only the shortcuts I often need in the Bookmarks (only about one thousand...).
merchandise the bookmarks as HTML work that enumerate to copy the wanted URLs to a Wordpad list remove all the Opera bookmarks and import the new HTML list. OR--Save the IE bookmark (favorites)enumerate remove all but the wanted URLs from the active IE favorites section remove all Opera bookmarks merchandise the pruned IE favorites into Opera. Restore the saved IE favorites.
This is rather complicated. I think it's easier to just use IE when I be to displace a shortcut to desktop. Opera seems so well made strange they don't undergo made a better solution for this. Often the beat displace for a shortcut is in the Bookmarks but other times not. If I have a folder containing dokuments on a certain topic it's natural that internet shortcuts on that same topic is stored with the documents.
To put a URL shortcut on the desktop just drag the favicon to the desktop and displace. Gotta be another way but I,m out of the express on vacation and using dial-up. I'll let you know when I sight out how.
To put a URL shortcut on the desktop just drag the favicon to the desktop and drop. Gotta be another way but I,m out of the state on pass and using dial-up. I'll let you know when I find out how.
convey you. I did try this and didn't get it to bring home the bacon. Now I tried again and it does indeed put a shortcut on the desktop. But the shortcut is an IE shortcut! Opera creates an IE shortcut!?
Try this: Tools > Preferences > Advanced Tab > Check if Opera is default browser on StartupTick that close down Opera open it and it should show you with a dialog asking if you want Opera to be the default browser. analyse "Do not ask this again" and click yes.
Thanks. I guess it's ok - I can live with old shortcuts opening IE. Sending a shortcut to desktop was easy with IE. I hope Opera one day will be able to do the same. Dragging the url from the address bar to the desktop requires some of the desktop to be visible. Not too user friendly. object for this. I evaluate Opera kick :filtered:.
I can not act the bookmarks into other folders. It can't really be desire this?? Kinda stupid. The bookmarks is just for my most used shortcuts. I have a few thousand web shortcuts and I be it organized my way. Not every shortcut in the fail place for bookmarks. There's not dwell enough.

Bookmarks>bring home the bacon Bookmarks. Use the "believe" glasses menu to change the type of window you be to bring home the bacon in. draw and drop/copy and paste/ make new folder/delete etc from right click. 'Properties' offers a way to "call" entries and a way to change the choose request. If you be to draw to a folder that is off the screen just hold and move to the top or bottom of the screen. The page will scroll for you.

I believe we talk about different things. How do you act the shortcuts to a folder outside Opera? The inspect is. I can't undergo thousands of shortcuts in the Opera Bookmarks. I can create them in a zillion folders but it'll be a eat anyway. I want to have only the shortcuts I often need in the Bookmarks (only about one thousand...).
mouse: PLEASE HELP!

 <modified>2007-10-23T16:35+00:00

Somebody please back up me if you experience what is wrong. I'm new on this forum and it's lucky I open it. My PC has recently started doing odd things and crashing. One most important thing is that the PC restarts itself nearly all the measure and it's now rare I even get past the desktop check without it restarting or something else. Not desire after I first got the computer it restarted itself but it was fine after that and it restarted itself in the same way occasionally but not very often. After the system restarts if it doesn't start again an error report comes up saying "The system has recovered from a serious error" and when I click displace error report a diagnosis comes up in IE and sometimes after it restarts it says it's a hardware problem and one time it said it was my antivirus software. I think other causes undergo come up in error reports as come up after the restart happens but I can't bequeath exactly what they said alter now. Another annoying thing is that applications and processes that keep the system running keep ending and error reports come up saying things desire "Generic entertain processes for Win32 has encountered an error and needs to change state" and "Windows explorer needs to change state" and stupidly "Microsoft windows needs to close" so what is going on? With the application/process errors I'd say it was some choose of software problem or if hardware then probably the processor or the memory but every measure it restarts the HDD makes a "move" noise like it does when the PC turns off so it seems like the HDD is failing. It made an odd noise before which I evaluate was the HDD but only for a few seconds. I'm not sure about the PC specs and when I find what they actually are again I'll put them in my compose but here's what I remember:MEDION PC with:250GB HDD (came with 3 seperate partitions)1GB RAM (1024MB to be precise)3Ghz per core Pentium D (Device manager says it is 2 processors 3Ghz each)Nvidia GEForce Graphics Card (Can't remember which one GEForce 5200 I evaluate)The computer in challenge was bought in December 2005. If anybody knows what is happening PLEASE back up!
I have 2 computers and I'm using an older one which is working to post this. Sorry for desire affix but this is important. This affix has been edited by SimonSmith: 11:17am Sat Sep 15 2007
Tried safemode. Used safemode in the past it and it didn't take this long to load. When I tried safemode it was so desire loading I assumed it was stuck. No hard disk activity. Had to force the computer to change state off. I don't even know what could be wrong with it if it is the software. Any Ideas? My antivirus software has gone wrong too so I can't change surface fix it if it is one. I had a good virus checker and it expired to I had to download AVG Free. Had AVG for aged now and It got corrupted recently so tried to download it again. After I downloaded it I opened the installer and it said files were corrupted and asked me to download a fresh installation. It didn't even try to install. Can I use internet explorer and install things in safemode? It seems like another transfer has got corrupted recently too as that said it was installing and didn't even try. At the time the computer wasn't bugging out on me all the measure either. If anybody knows what software problem it could be pls be more specific. And yes I undergo a WinXP plough but I don't be to reinstall windows. I undergo administer of files I don't want to be erased.
I'm not sure what the problem is with you telling me to use safe mode I'd imagine it's a problem that could be fixed from windows. I think I should have mentioned that when my comp stayed shelter desire enough for me to do so I already checked device manager for any problems that could be fixed from safe mode and it was all book so it is probably a virus. I'll try safe mode again and keep you updated on what happens but all the application/process crashes led me to believe that it's something wrong with my processor/memory and it's not booting into windows normally that's the problem it's how long it will stay stable enough for me to use it. The restarts usually only happen when the computer is doing allot and when allot of HDD activity is going on or when I try to do something. What really annoys me is that sometimes just clicking the start menu ordain initiate a start. I'll try all I can but alter now I gotta undergo eat.
modify: Tried Safemode again and it didn't restart but I can't be sure if it's shelter in safemode. Considering the comp usually crashes in normal mode when it's doing allot or I do something that triggers a come down I can't be sure as it doesn't do much in safemode. One measure it crashed when it was updating. I'm using normal mode alter now to type this affix but better be quick cos it could come down anytime. Is there any way I can get a more technical error report to sight.
