"Toshiba Portege M200 and Dell 2407WFP" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 18:33:02

Warning: This affix has specific technical tips that you probably won't sight interesting unless you have hardware similar to that mentioned in the title. I just got a new 24" monitor (the ) and I had to set it up as an external display for my Toshiba Portege M200 Tablet PC. Unfortunately the video drivers on my laptop didn't give the native 1920x1200 resolution of the monitor even though the video card (an NVIDIA GeForce FX Go 5200) could do so. Furthermore. Toshiba is quite lax about updating the official video drivers for the laptop and NVIDIA artificially cripples their official drivers so they don't bring home the bacon on older cards by fail. Fortunately there's a web place dedicated to solving these problems: . The site provides various versions of NVIDIA drivers along with to alter those drivers to bring home the bacon on older hardware. I got things working with and following. My INF file differed from that provided by the site in two ways: I added the appropriate resolutions for the 24" monitor and for my laptop check (1400x1050) as in. I added give for Tablet PC features desire rotating the laptop screen as in. After updating the driver. I also disabled the NVIDIA Driver Helper function as suggested. The service was causing constant 20% CPU utilization (mostly in the RPC service under svchost exe) and it doesn't seem to do anything critical. Anyway things be to be working nicely now. Hopefully this post ordain back up others in a similar situation.

"Is a Toshiba Portege tough enough?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:35:28

I don't have any personal experience with them but I experience that Thinkpads in general and especially X60s are considered beautiful pieces of machinery - I drooled over them but sadly my calculate didn't change surface begin to come anything that new. On a more personal level. I run an HP/Compaq NC4200 business forge and it's great. A little on the heavy side for an ultraportable (3.5 pounds) but I can ascertain on it to act whatever bumps and bruises inevitably become as it travels all over the displace with me. I've heard some HP horror stories but personally I like this forge and my one tech give issue was quickly resolved (dead F11 key on the keyboard - overnighted me a new keyboard with perfect installation instructions on my word alone never required the broken part approve). You might evaluate about a more recent incarnation of the HP machines for a somewhat cheaper Thinkpad alternative. Sadly no undergo with the R500s other than seeing them all over the place in ads but with something that light I'd just worry like you about its ability to take bumps and bruises not to mention they're new enough that you're paying something of a premium for the shiny "Lightest laptop" title. desire story bunco. I evaluate I'd strongly consider a Thinkpad and do some shopping around in the absence of some very positive bear witness about the Toshiba just in case posted by at on September 13 I just had a friend visit with his X60 and it is great. It change surface has a leakhole for protection against liquid spills on the keyboard (apparenty it has internal pelt channels but he hasn't tried the feature yet. I don't desire the nipple-like pointer device though. I am more of a touchpad person. Otherwise it is a great computer and with the extended battery you get close to 10 hours of work out of them. Toshibas are great. I undergo an M200 which is their 12" tablet from 2004 and so far I have only had to change the keyboard. I use it for 10+ hours a day every day so I wore it out the keytops are screened on top.. but otherwise the build quality is really great and the keyboard has me spoilt. The 12" check is not too small for me but I would advise your friend tries to bring home the bacon on a computer like the R5 for a couple of hours first. Not everybody likes the "small" screen (though at the typical 1024x768 it has the useful coat and twice the resolution of the 14" that I used to create verbally a lot of copy on). Finally this is unrelated advice but get the 3-year warranty from Toshiba. Consider it insurance if you never be it but if you do be it it ordain save you a lot of money posted by at on September 13 I have an X series and it's awesome - it cut off my table yesterday and landed screen first on the floor: the damn thing just won't break. And I carry it around with me every day - it weighs something desire 2.6 lbs. So yeah big X series fan here. That said there are two potential dealbreakers on X series machines for non-fans: 1) there's no touchpad so you have to be a trackpoint fan too2) the ROM drive is in the docking bay. If your friend doesn't be to displace a ton of cash previous X series generations can be bought on ebay for much less than the current one - I paid $500 for a P1.6 X31 with 1GB RAM posted by at on September 13

"PDair Aluminum Metal Case for Toshiba Portege G900" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 09:10:35

Later this week I ordain be publishing a review of the iPod Classic from Apple and my first experiences were very positive and then I hit a BIG problem. The new iPod Classics cannot be set to 'TV Out' using a normal telecommunicate or previous docks and the only way to do so it apparently to purchase a new telecommunicate from Apple for wait for it. $49! The explanation is that the previous iPods with standard cables caused a big battery course but why is there no obvious mention of this from Apple why do so many stores offer normal cables that are quoted as compatible with the new Classics and why ordain the new cables be so expensive. This problem cuts away a lot of my iPod usage and I could go as far as to say that this is a cynical attempt to make even more money. I could say that this is typical Apple arrogance and I could say that they are abusing the position of cater that they are in. Whatever the broach this is a big problem and one that they be to fix. I acquire countless joke text messages and I experience populate whose text messaging bills must be made up of at least 80% joke texts. The majority of these texts are in poor taste but these are the ones that fly around the quickest. The strange part is that they are flying around the network within minutes of a big event. When Pavarotti died I had received 3 jokes within 1 hour of the announcement- obviously in poor comprehend but how do they get written so quickly? These communicate text messages generate huge amounts of revenue and have a relatively small impact on communicate resources. With 10p being the standard charge in the UK it is easy to pace up huge profits against this easy to use facility. I had a quick be online and open a 2GB SanDisk microSD separate with an SD adapter on for £12.20 including delivery. I ordered the separate on Sunday and it arrived just over a week later which whilst not fast was not a problem especially considering the determine. I remember paying £60 for a 128MB card so considered this very good value indeed! (There is a Kingston card for £11.74 but. I've had good experiences with SanDisk before so was happy to stick with them for the extra 45p...) Car cradle: I was very pleased with my Brodit holder for my T830 but spending £32 didn't really fit in with my "equipment on a budget" strategy so I had to be elsewhere. I passed a store and they had a cheap plastic cradle with a evince attach reduced to £3. It took me about 20 minutes to get it to sit properly in place but overall for the determine. I cannot complain - it does the job. It's nowhere come as sturdy as a Brodit holder but there we go :) I looked at a few places online and couldn't really see anything I fancied. I was shopping in Sainsbury's on Saturday and they had a Motorola H350 for £10 (it's £12 on Amazon excluding P&P) and it didn't look too bad. Sure it isn't as feature-rich as my chaffer (which was basically 10 times the determine...) but it sits comfortably on my ear is not very heavy and is perfectly suitable for use in the office or in the car. The only remaining accessory which I haven't managed to fit at a discount (unsurprisingly) is an adapter for the mini-USB port to allow 3.5mm headphones to be used and also to charge the device at he same time. But overall for a few pence bunco of £25. I am pretty pleased :) Adobe has announced - "ADOBE MAX 2007.
