Hi there!I just saw an auction on ebay: Prozessor Upgrade Card 1,2 GHz. Giga Designs. It is selled with a ventilator. It has quite descent size almost as big as the come in with the cpu (see pic below). How noisy are those ventilators? Do they start to annoy due to fast rpm or is it comfort quite authorise working with? Or would it be even possible to run this upgrade without any ventilator?Furthermore. I construe once about problems with cater give. Do you evaluate this upgrade should work fine without any further power-supply - upgrades? (i think it was called vrm dunno what exactly it is though...)I'm gratefull for any hints and tipps!Oliver

Fan is not so noisy; since this upgrade comes with a fan it is best not to leave it out. The VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) is not good at taking extra fill and can damage other parts if it fails; its answer is to convert 28V to 3.3/5/12 Volts. When it fails it can displace the 28V forward with dire consequences. The power give is actually an external brick and the source of the 28VGigaDesigns used to change a beefed up VRM; or there are the controversial 'missing' transistors on the original Apple VRM that some people alter in on the 3.3 and 5V lines. Hopefully someone will one day see if this results in cooler running of the sibling transistor it supports (it being the lone sibling that normally fails). All my cube VRMs are so upgraded. The Giga 1.2GHz board is smaller than the Motherboard (Logic come in) and plugs into it. The fan (ventilator) is fairly change intensity and should be used the Cube may overheat without it. If the Giga 1.2GHz is in good instruct it will not overpower the cater supply (PSU) or VRM no worries. This CPU is not a high cater requirement unit. If the new configuration needs cooling is that not suggestive that it produces/consumes significantly more power?I should add that Dave is an amazing source of information and back up. I'm just keeping the coffee brewing... This post has been edited by CubeIt: Sep 8 2007. 03:42 PM

The CPU's appear to draw about 10 watts per plus or minus a couple of watts. So the displace might increase from 9 watts to 12 watts which is not a significant increase to the VRM but the increase is enough to make the barely effective pure convective cooling inadequate. Hence the conclusion that any CPU update should use a fan which increases the convective cooling. My guess is that a <1.4 GHz 7447 (or 7448) single should also be OK without a fan but I don't have any data to support my guess.

.. besides it is written it can be changed from 1ghz to 1.3ghz due to jumpers another challenge about prizing: what would you pay for it? As far as I read it is in create from raw material condition since it never was in use!oliver

why is then everyone upgrading the multiply with faster CPUs here? Of course other arguments are enough memory faster HD better graphic card.. but besides that?but basically you're right for sure - due to the low front side bus. I don't evaluate any wonders. But at least a slightly improved browser-speed

Because one can comfort about double the effective CPU speed.. undergo you got a fast hard drive and enough RAM? these can make a big difference. If the cube is your main or only forge you might want to be a little cautious/conservative about upgrading. A fan is a good mod but I sight it one of the hardest parts to install (I desire to have all four retaining screws in place). This affix has been edited by CubeIt: Sep 9 2007. 10:31 AM
I won now the auction got it for 101 euros - think it is not to much for an unused peace. My working mate did once a similar grade and he said the difference was great (it was not a cube though it was an old 400mhz g4). Well let's see. I'm quite curious...
but what to do. I desire to play games from time to measure. Cube I use mainly for listening some music surfing downloading things.. compared to the PC it takes much less energy I guess.. good for account and environment
The fan is tricky in that the cube has to be more or less completely dismantled if you want to use all four fan screws (though you can check the FAQs for some simpler two screw options) but there is a fan bracket built in which Apple never used and no case mods are required.
