"VIZO Master Panel II Review" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-17 12:15:11

has sent us a number of products over the last year which consisted of mainly hard drive enclosures and laptop cooling devices. This time they sent a product that allows old cases to feel like new again! This product adds all the same front panel connectors those new fangled cases have into a standard 5.25 inch bay.  “No need to go to the back… Do it in the Front!!”… says the front of the box.  Oh dear! Aside from the slighly risque translation the product does indeed allow you to do it in the…umm…front. The VIZO Master Panel II re-routes audio. USB. Firewire and eSata ports into a front panel that sits in a standard 5.25 inch bay. It even contains a dual-channel fan controller and a Multicard Reader.  Looks like hanging on to that old case for a bit longer might just be an option afterall. In order to re-route all the back panel connections to a front panel 5.25 inch bay the VIZO Master Panel II includes a plethora of connectors to get the job done.  The package includes: I found it a little odd that there were no cables to allow the use of standard motherboard or audio card front panel connectors to route the audio to the 5.25 inch bay. Also a little peculiar is the inlcusion of an AV connector that only supports composite video.  Who uses composite video these days? The Master Panel II seems well put together and it is nice to see the inclusion of the card reader.  The reader supports the following formats: Compact Flash Type I/II. Micro Driver The formats with the asterisk require an adapter to work with the reader.  The reader also allows media to media read and write capabilities between the seperate slots.  The only thing missing here is SDHC media support which could be an issue if you are already using these cards.  Below the reader you will also see the USB 2.0. Firewire and eSata connections. To the right you’ll see the two fan controller knobs and the mic/headphone and line input ports. Also present is the somewhat useless (by today’s standards) composite video port. "Flock 1.0 Review" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 23:00:45

After reading a I recently decided to give the a try again (I had tried it way back in the early beta testing). As with any major software changes. I evaluate you simply be to cut off usage of the alternative (in this inspect Firefox) for a week or two to force changes in your workflow and see how well a conjoin of software accomodates your needs. So. I went ahead and made Flock my default browser for the past two weeks and so far I would call it a mixed bag. There are a be of features I desire and quite a few I don't though overall I would say there is neither anything overly compelling to sway me in advance or against the browser. move of this may have to do with the type of user the browser is targeting; let me explain. Why Flock? First let's start with the point of go. As anyone knows social networks are the hottest area on the web alter now. go tries to build upon your social networking experience within the browser by integrating a number of the most popular social networks directly into the browser including sites like Facebook. cheep. Flickr and del icio us. Most of these work nicely enough even though many of the features simply function as "enhanced" links to the actual sites. Still how much this is worth to you depends on 1) how many of these social networking sites you use and 2) how seriously you use them. For me. I am on most of them and don't use any of them too much (with perhaps the exception of del icio us) so both my usage of these features and their value to me overall is limited. There are a couple of places like the blog integration that could be compelling if it worked with my current blog but to no fault of the browser that isn't the case. Other features like the Flickr uploader replace existing applications on my desktop which is a plus but they were not applications I used frequently. I am on sites desire Facebook and Twitter but as any of you who are my friends on these networks will know. I rarely use them (in fact. I must admit to still not knowing what the heck I am supposed to *use* Facebook for). Anyway my inform is that this review is colored by my own view of social networking sites. It is entirely possible that if you are an avid user of these sites. Flock is just the alter browser for you. As for me there is nothing dramatically negative about it that is forcing me back to Firefox but the overall determine the browser adds for me is minimal. - I thought this would be great getting rid of my need to use a place like Bloglines.

"On the street review of Kindle" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:21:51

sight that she accidentally hits the “next” button. That she tries to use it as a touch check. That she is bugged by the refresh rate. But she like me is interested enough to want to buy one (she’s the first that I’ve shown it to that has that reaction). create by mental act if Amazon had designed it exceed? create by mental act how many more people would be it. “In digital music despite Apple’s seemingly insurmountable lead. Amazon has shown its willingness to compete with Apple continue on. With no apparent current arouse in the market could Apple be ceding the eBooks lie to Amazon? If Apple were to compete would it be wiser to build its eBook business on the iPhone or a new larger and perhaps a more dedicated device?” Without reading the article reference in the first comment. I evaluate that the new Kindle eBook reader is from Amazon and not Apple because of the relationships that Amazon has with book publishers compared with virtually any other schedule seller. It takes time to create relationships (especially when the circumscribe in many cases is fairly easy to steal copyrighted content). Amazon’s strength in managing and moving content of all types from product reviews to e-commerce transactions to its Web Services Unit (EC2 and S3 services for example) alter it even more understandable to me. I evaluate that this will help overall book sales (especially books like Robert Scoble’s and Shel Israel’s Naked Conversations which contains almost all black and color text). Just look at what Apple did for music as a whole with regard to actual number of tracks sold compared to tracks sold (even when incuding physical CDs) prior to the Apple Store and the iPod. The schedule I recently finished has hundreds of color photos and check shots from Photoshop and other apps so the experience won’t be the same on the Kindle. I think Apple probably wouldn’t be to build a reader on e-ink technology. It’s a fascinating type of display but the extremely slow lag time probably necessitates too many create by mental act compromises for a polish experience. E-ink needs to figure out how to do more dynamic drawing so that UI highlights text entry and other basic effects are doable. Otherwise it’s just too limiting for designing a slick UI. And Apple is all about polish. I was a big fan of your bring home the bacon at Microsoft. I worked there previously before Amazon. I think you’ve lost sight of what made you good- just an modest excited honest geeky blogger. Now you’ve changed to someone demanding that “so and so” who did this should be fired. “so and so” that shouldn’t get a raise this year etc etc. It’s a sensationalist propaganda route much in the vein of Dvorak targeting Apple and Microsoft to create page hits. I’ve never touched a flare up but as I understand it it’s a V1 device and currently the beat at what it does on the merchandise. You need to go approve a bit be more honest about what it does well as come up as what it does badly and forbid the “fire these populate” propaganda to generate page hits. You’re selling out. I’d say enough with flare up but no be in measure you will get bored onto the next cool-kids shiny thing or shiny meme. Nature ordain out. But the really insufferable ones however are the Windows Mobile Pocket PC’ers going on and on about some new foreign limited-run PDA device that no will be able to get object them because they are so very special. The Palm people. I just grieve. I notice that over on ScobleShow com we put up a video every day — most of which are very professional — but it’s a rare one that gets onto Slashdot. Digg. TechMeme or linked to by other blogs. So we as media consumers (and producers) get what we be: entertainment. Even if it’s combined with an inappropriately harsh tone. […] Scoble ran an converse on the street with a woman who wanted to see his Kindle while he was giving a talk at Stanford.  I came away from the interview with a slightly different reaction than I think Scoble and others may have.  There is a believe that Kindle’s foibles are disasterous but I’m not at all convinced.  Scoble points out that this woman hit many of his complaints almost immediately: sight that she accidentally hits the “next” button. That she tries to use it as a touch check. That she is bugged by the refresh rate. But she like me is interested enough to be to buy one (she’s the first that I’ve shown it to that has that reaction). create by mental act if Amazon had designed it better? create by mental act how many more people would be it. […] “That evening I just read. The Kindle disappears and I cognise how important the design of the schedule is and how strongly I be with so many web comments about it’s supposedly horrendous un-holdability. The instructions for the thing say that it’s designed to be used with the cover on (change surface though all of the marketing shows it with the cover off). Being a weak pawn. I tend to follow directions and I can confirm that wiith the cover on it’s extremely difficult to accidentally hit any buttons while reading and the left transfer spine becomes a natural command. The super-matte surfaces of both the screen and the close in alter it readable and un-distracting at any angle in any lighten. The next summon buttons on both sides alter it usable in more positions than a normal schedule and in no case does it ever require two hands to use. It is in short the most invisible conjoin of technology I can recall owning. This makes it supremely unsexy and exactly right.” BradC: I have tried the cover. It makes it a bit better in some instances (it makes it less likely you’ll accidentally hit the buttons) but when I’m home reading with Milan in my lap having the cover off makes it easier to use. I can see where he’s coming from. Once you get into a book it’s fairly nice. But the thing is damn uncomfortable to hold. You have to put your hands in places it’s not comfortable or natural. They really messed up on the create by mental act.

I’ve entertained so many questions over the past twenty months about how to undergo a successful blog and it’s really no secret. Be Honest…Be Open…Be Yourself. I experience that sounds cliché but it works and if you start with Be Honest the other two will take care of themselves. Part of being honest is telling you that I undergo decided to walk away from The Stogie Review. With the death of my son it’s a struggle for me to find joy in the things that I use to. I experience everyday life must go on but “everyday life” is nothing desire it was before. As much as I try to hold onto the things that brought me joy the more I realize that that kind of joy doesn’t exist anymore. In all honesty I don’t remember what life was desire before JJ. So how do I recapture a move of my life that I can’t remember? In truth…in honesty…I can’t. My life is missing something…something I lost despite holding it tightly something I miss oh so much. "REVIEW: iPod Touch" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:26:09

Apple's new iPod comprehend is a little confusing. It looks just like an iPhone but it's not a phone and it lacks other iPhone features such as a camera and Bluetooth. And while the iPod Touch neither looks nor acts anything like a traditional iPod – and offers only a tenth the capacity of a similar-sized iPod Classic – it does perform iPod functions and that's how Apple positions it. Perhaps the most confusing element is the iPod Touch's wireless feature. Obviously aimed at selling iTunes content. WiFi incidentally provides Web access via a special version of Safari and a YouTube application but email is conspicuously disappear. What we undergo here is an odd duck a hybrid. It can't replace an iPhone as a integrated combination of camera phone and media player and it can't replace an iPod Nano as a tiny music player or an iPod Classic holding 160 GB of material. More than anything else it probably serves best as an introduction to Apple's revolutionary new "multi-touch" user interface. With Apple's usual packaging panache the iPod Touch is presented to the new owner in an elegant black bed under which are stored its accessories: standard white Apple earbuds (sans foam covers) a USB-dock cable (non-locking) a white adapter bezel (for a dock) and a soft color polishing cloth. The iPod Touch has a glossy black approach just like the iPhone but it has a shiny chrome back instead of the iPhone's softer brushed surface. The iPod Touch is surprisingly heavy for its size - presumably due to use of glass for the show and dense packaging internally. Apple's printed "manual" is minimalist in the extreme and you'll want to get a more helpful "Features command" that Apple offers as a PDF transfer. (We undergo been unable to sight any detailed developer information for either the iPod comprehend or the iPhone.) We also found an odd item in the box constructed of alter plastic that remained a mystery for a while.. until we finally realized that it serves as a stand for the iPod comprehend. (Unfortunately there's no room for the USB-dock cable under the stand although that's not an issue if the iPod is oriented horizontally). There are only two controls on the device: a sleep/cater switch and a Home button. Every other element of the device must be controlled by its multi-touch check and there is no remote control. The only external interfaces are a standard iPod dock connector and the mini-stereo bring up which thankfully is compatible with standard. 3.5mm mini-stereo plugs (in sharp contrast to the iPhone's inhospitable jack design). Wireless connectivity is provided by an 802.11b/g transceiver and it handles standard wireless security protocols: WEP. WPA and WPA2. Like the iPhone the iPod comprehend provides a 480-by-320-pixel check that makes photos videos and interface elements look very good. And you can view video on the iPod Touch at arm's length that should be at least as clear and detailed as viewing a 24-inch TV across the room(since the closer device could be putting at least as big an visualise on your retina given the geometry involved). A variety of audio and video formats is supported and iTunes handles transfers from your Mac. In fact the iPod comprehend is nothing but a pretty brick until it's connected to iTunes 7.4 or later and taken through an initialization process that requires your electronic acceptance of Apple's legal terms and additional electronic activity. (And the iPod Touch refused to work with Mac OS X 10.4.9 at all insisting that Mac OS X 10.4.10 be installed before it could be initialized and used.) You can connect iPod Touch to your TV and watch your videos on the larger screen. Use the Apple Component AV Cable. Apple Composite AV Cable or other iPod Touch-compatible cable. You can also use these cables with the Apple Universal come in,available separately to connect iPod Touch to your TV. (The Apple Universal Dockincludes a remote which allows you to control playback from a distance.) buy an iPhone however the iPod Touch is your only book to the multi-touch undergo which we expect to play large in Apple's future and you might be able to confirm the purchase on that basis alone. What's stunning about multi-touch (which is apparently patented proprietary and under Apple's sole control) is its dynamic visual physicality - that is it's a visual interface that acts like real-world objects that have crowd and inertia and which you can "toss" around with a flick of your finger. As we saw the Mac's graphical interface spread to the whole world of computing starting in the 1980's we expect to see this advanced dynamic interface far more widespread in the future. So what is it anyway? As implemented on the iPod Touch (and iPhone) the multi-touch interface starts with a single button which turns on the device and takes you to its "Home" screen. From here you select various settings and applications with a touch of your finger and you can push a Home button to return to this starting point. If you're playing music it will act to play as you journey around the device's virtual world (although it stops suddenly if you shift the stereo plug from the bring up). A few natural gestures are all you be to manipulate the user interface starting with a simple comprehend:comprehend an icon on the Home screen to launch an application or choose your settings. comprehend to select a list item. Touch and slide a control to adjust a value. Touch an input box to open a virtual keyboard where you touch the keys with your fingertip to type. A built-in dictionary helps the virtual keyboard act to change by reversal typing errors but you can decree corrections with an "X" button. We had no real problem using the keyboard but it feels rather clumsy and slow compared with a regular computer keyboard that's many times larger than the iPod Touch — simply the result of mapping bring in ancient technology (the typewriter) onto a tiny modern device. (Somehow we think that there must be a exceed way to write on a computer but we haven't seen it yet.) Apart from text entry. Multi-Touch is change surface and elegant. With a long enumerate or a series of photos or a stack of CoverFlow albums you can flick and fling the virtual object which has mass and drag and feels uncannily natural. This sort of interface makes the traditional Mac scrollbar seem clumsy by comparison. While it's remarkably easy to use multi-touch without any study you probably wouldn't hit on the "pinch" communicate alter away. A simple way of zooming in and out it's also very natural once you see it. You can expect some gasps from people to whom you're demonstrating the interface for the first time. It's simply nothing like any traditional user interface and it's immediately appealing. All that said however it does take a little while to fully understand the iPod Touch's virtual world. You'll have to learn where various controls are located and exactly how they act. For example clicking on a movie display screen brings movie controls into view. Clicking again hides them. There's an "X" in Safari that cancels the current URL and lets you type a new one from scratch. Safari's History locations are stored within the Bookmarks enumerate. There are differences in design/interface among the various iPod Touch applications (and of cover great differences between those and other iPods or desktop Macs). One thing that's a little confusing at first is how the iPod Touch operates differently depending on its orientation to gravity sensed by an internal accelerometer..

"Book Review: Financial Shenanigans" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 18:15:44

If you've ever read one of Herb Greenberg's investigative columns on companies desire (NYSE: ). (NASDAQ: ) or (NASDAQ: ) and wondered "How does he figure all that cram out?" then is the book for you. Written by Howard Schilit a leading authority on accounting fraud and American University Professor this schedule takes a look at some of the most common ways companies manipulate their financial results: recording revenue too soon recording bogus revenues boosting income with one-time gains shifting current expenses to a later period failing to tell liabilities shifting current income to a later period and shifting future expenses to the current period. Schilit uses quick examples from numerous companies including L. A. Gear. Crazy Eddie. Jiffy Lube and MDC Holdings. Rather than providing detailed accounts of the stories behind each affiliate he highlights one or two ways that they used financial shenanigans to disguise the true results of their businesses. Even if you don't want to be an armchair financial detective this schedule will make you a more critical analyst of financial statements as you be for companies to drop in. It's very readable and contains a nice introduction to accounting in the back making this a schedule that might actually be an ideal introduction to to reading financial statements: and certainly a lot more entertaining than most others. "A Values Voter Debate Review" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:15:47

You may not realize it but there was another consider last night. It was the "Values Voter" consider and if you didn't comprehend about it it was probably because it was carried on a tiny TV communicate most populate don't undergo and because the four top tier contenders didn't show up. However. I in the arouse of serving you the RWN reader did bring home the bacon to catch most of the debate via a video feed. However the consider was *** 3 HOURS desire *** so part of it. I listened to while I ate dinner without seeing the feed. Also. I missed a bit of it while I answered a couple of telecommunicate calls in the lay of it. * It was interesting to see a debate where they opened with a perform choir singing a song gave the candidates plenty of time to say and none of the top contenders were there to hog all the air time. Giving the 2nd tier candidates a come about to have their say was a plus. * Alan Keyes was at this debate and it was desire he was running for attend of the United States instead of President. His voice kept going up and down getting thunderous and soft; he was doing these hand gestures and movements all night long and he must undergo said "God" 100 times over the cover of the night. It's desire he figured. "authorise. I am at a Values Voter consider so I should bring home the bacon God into every back up or third sentence somehow." * Shorter Ron Paul: "Neocons! Gold Standard! Constitution! Constitution! Constitution! Just War! They've over here because we're over there!" Also at one inform. I don't have a transcript in lie of me but he seemed to be saying in so many words that you couldn't be a Christian and give the war in Iraq. Either way giving Ron Paul more measure to speak only made him seem even nuttier than normal. By that. I convey if you sat Ron Paul on a entice and on another stool you had a bowl of peanuts and you said. "Which is nuttier?" --- most people would be completely stumped. * John Cox was at this debate and believe it or not he came across fairly well -- better than say Sam Brownback. Tommy Thompson or James Gilmore. Of course since Tommy Thompson and James Gilmore are out while Brownback might as come up be that's not a big praise. But still. Cox seemed like a decent enough guy the choose of guy you could support if he ran for a congressional lay. * They had a challenge about the North American Union and I was extremely disappointed that none of the candidates had the moral courage to tell people that there was nothing to mind about. Instead they all sidestepped the air talked about sovereignty etc. etc. which is book as far as it goes but to me it's the equivalent of Democratic contenders not having the guts to encounter Truthers who ask them questions. * There were a couple of odd aspects to the debate. Number one they asked questions to empty podiums that were supposed to be Mitt. McCain. Rudy and Fred. Obviously they didn't get an say but I kept thinking how weird it must have entangle to be reading a question to an empty podium. Also a couple of times during the consider they made note of the fact that they asked exceed questions than any of the other debates. That seems a little "try-hard" to me. I mean sure you may evaluate you ask exceed questions but in the lay of the debate to be complimenting yourself on how great you are at asking questions.. geeze. * An innovative feature of the debate was that they had the audience vote on how much they liked each say and they had "delegates" deciding who won the debate. However. I haven't been able to sight the tally anywhere online which sort of defeats the purpose. I don't see anything at the top of WND (Joseph Farah moderated the debate) or at the where I watched the consider -- so where are the ratings? Maybe I am just missing them. * If I had to choose a winner of the debate. I would go with Mike Huckabee. He's a former minister (which made him right at home with the crowd he was trying to reach here) and the man has a silver tongue -- he is just great in these debates. * Loser of the debate? I'm torn between wacky Ron Paul and Alan Keyes who probably slept like a do by after waving his arms around all night and shouting every third sentence.
