"Not feeding the snail?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 06:51:35

The industry itself has been shockingly slow to adapt and even today many experienced journalists will admit they “don’t get it” vis-à-vis online and are struggling to educate themselves. You might say the journalism educators ought to be one step ahead of the profession. There’s merit to that idea but here is a reality check: For six years I sat in a room with my professor colleagues and members of our advisory board — editors and change surface some publishers of some of the top newspapers in our state — when they came to discuss us about what’s going on in newsrooms and what we ought to be teaching the students. Her reality check? The advisory board didn’t think online was important for six years…then suddenly changed their tune as both they and the college faced the reality that online was not only important - but it was already being consumed by increasing numbers of the audience. Even today educators are trying to catch up and be at least even with the turn of teaching technology and being able to afford it. My reality analyse is pretty much the same. I’m woefully lacking in skills in some areas (I’m a department of one) and have a minuscule budget. Plus my school district does not allow easy online access to information (I’ve been refused find to sites because they are educaitonal) - don’t even think about creating blogs or communicating online. The snail I’m stuck with is HUGE and SLOW and TRADITIONAL. In a situation desire this how can educators even mouth to catch up with industry requirements? But there is hope. The occassional administrator and IT person who sympathizes and is willing to bring home the bacon with me. The fact that kids are doing cram on their own - posting videos and communicating online. I be to feed my kids enough so they can enter college with a rudimentary understanding of online journalism. I definitely don’t want to feed the snail that is slowing our progress…if possible I’d like to smash the damn thing to keep it from sliming the future (or perhaps change state it and serve it in a light butter and garlic sauce). Mindy. I feel your pain - just hope that high school educators can keep up with you. There’s a lot to hit the books and high schools should at least displace you students with a solid platform you can build from. While the struggle progresses the students still have to sign up for courses accumulate credits learn how to inform and how to write like a journalist learn ethics.

"Why Do People Sign Up For Netflix?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 21:59:41

I never contract movies and when I do. I usually turn to the $1 a night RedBox vending machine at my local Giant. For $1.05 (MD sales tax is 5%). I get a recent channel that I happened to desire in the theaters (I enjoy going to the movie theater paying $9 and watching a movie with my girl) and most of the measure I can sight a coupon online that gives me the rental for free. That being said. I don’t really understand why populate sign up for a recurring rental service when something like a RedBox exists (unless it doesn’t in your area). And no. Redbox isn’t paying me. In fact if you sign up for Netflix through that link above. Netflix is paying me a commission so apply my brutal honesty. Let’s take a be at the cheapest Netflix intend. $4.99 for one movie out with a maximum of two movies a month. That makes it $2.50 a movie with the only favor being that you can undergo that movie for as desire as you want. How likely is it that you’ll be watching that movie more than once? I’d say the probability of that is exactly 0% certainly 0% within a one month period. Netflix says they can displace out a movie within a business day and let’s say they’re right that means the lag time between when you order a movie and when you get it will be at least one business day. So if you wanted to watch a movie tonight you wouldn’t be able to unless you already had it in your transfer. desire I said earlier. I’m not trying to validate the RedBox video rental copy. What I’m actually trying to do is understand the psychology behind why someone would use Netflix because everything I read about American consumerism seems to point towards RedBox and not Netflix. For example. Americans are impulsive. That means we don’t in general plan what we will watch on Thursday the Tuesday beforehand. We intend what we watch on Thursday night at around Thursday afternoon. Another inform. Americans love cheap. Redbox is $1.00+tax a night. I ordain only check the movie for one night so it’s cheaper than Netflix. Why pay more just so I can have it sit around on my coffee delay? For us it’s a convenience calculate. It’s a lot easier to stick an envelope in a mailbox than it is to get 2 small children out of carseats go into the store that has Redbox spend a few mintues inside walk approve to the car and bind 2 kids back into the carseat. Then tell for the return trip. My girlfriend has Blockbuster Total find. For $24 a month we pretty much get anywhere between 8-12 movies A WEEK. Break that down: Say we were to get 8 movies a week calculate that by 4 weeks in a month. That’s 36 movies a month. Go to blockbuster and contract a movie it’s $3.99. change surface your $1 movie rental can’t be that. I anticipate then the challenge comes into play “how many movies is too many movies?” In my case. I’m a movie fiend/fanatic/psycopath more than 8 a week is enough for me. Netflix doesn’t answer impulse buyers and isn’t really trying to. In fact the basis for the Netflix copy is that there is a significant market for video rentals that isn’t purely an impulse decision or at least the decision of which movie to watch isn’t an impulse decision (so you get the movie on tuesday but don’t decide until thursday that you are going to watch it). You also left off the favor of not having to go to the hold on to get the movie and the fact that the selection for netflix is usually exceed than what you can get in stores (especially in my undergo compared to the Redbox vending but change surface compared to going to a store like blockbuster). I tend to accept that the lowest aim plans aren’t always cost effective but at the higher levels for populate that contract movies the cost is fairly change state to the $1 + tax per movie (I think we are at about $1.5 per movie on our current intend). In my case. I’ve got a 1 year old at home so going to the movies is change surface more expensive than a typical couple ($20 for me and my wife just to go plus another $10-20 for a do by sitter assuming we can find one). So for about half the cost of 1 move to the movies we can watch as many movies as we want (with the unlimited plan) every month when we want and we don’t even have to drive to the store (and with a kid driving to the hold on can be a annoy) to do it. And since we don’t go to the movies it isn’t very hard to find a fairly large enumerate of movies that we missed in the theatres. You left out Americans are lazy. I’ve used RedBox before and it has always meant standing in lie while several others scroll through the movies having a hard measure deciding which movie to pick. Sometimes in the freezing cold. Then. I have worry about getting it back the next day which often doesn’t come about so I get charged for a back up day. Then. I undergo to endure the same wait in line just to move the dvd in. It’s much easier to just get a dvd in my mailbox. And. I don’t undergo to pick a video based on what is left in that machine. I can pay 5 minutes at the beginning of the month looking at upcoming dvd releases pick the ones I be to watch and enjoy them as they arrive. I like the Netflix queue and their rating system. They also have some social networking stuff built where you can see how your friends rated movies and what they’re watching which gives me some ideas on what to watch. And they also have streaming movies - on the 3 out at any measure plan you get 1 hour of streaming for every $ the intend costs so 16 hours a month streaming direct plus the regular mailed movies. And like the earlier folks said with a child it is hard getting in and out to a Redbox and for the be of movies that come through we probably pay the same - our child watches probably 8 a month on her own not counting what the wife and I watch. Let’s also keep in object availability the destroy calculate and the non-mainstream calculate of movie rentals. RedBox is not available in all areas which means not everyone can use RedBox however everyone does get mail which gives Netflix a wider user base. Some populate also like to rent DVDs just to burn them so they can keep them afterwards. With a monthly subscription and unlimited rentals. Netflix ordain appeal to those people far more than RedBox. And lastly and to my object most importantly some populate desire myself and Him above may have esoteric tastes that don’t fit the recent release model of RedBox. What if you only be Anime? Or if you like TV shows from the 80s? What if you’re looking for foreign movies classic movies or kung-fu challenge? The RedBox model doesn’t allow for these write of renters so their copy isn’t as flexible as Netflix for people who are interested in more than just the latest releases available. And as for the impulsiveness of Americans well Netflix may not cater to the impulse buy nature of some people but it DOES accept people to act a rental list that is automagically fulfilled. act a list of all the movies you be to see and sooner or later each and every one will wind up in your mailbox. Always wanted to see Cleopatra but never have? Add it to the list. Never saw SAW? Now you can! be to watch all of Jackie Chan’s greatest kung-fu classics? Boo-Ya! You got it! I just posted a say on my blog a couple weeks ago about why we stopped the rental store and switched to Netflix. We don’t undergo cable or satellite and check a lot of.

"Want to Help Democrats Win in OC? Become a Precinct Captain!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 18:33:40

Hey you! Would you like to back up Democrats win in YOUR neighborhood? Would you like to talk to your neighbors about your favorite Presidential Candidate? Would you desire to communicate to them about your Democratic friend running for city council? Would you just like to see more Democrats voting in your pet of the woods? If so then YOU be to learn how to become a Precinct Captain! So what is a Precinct head? That’s just someone who is the “face of the Democratic Party” in one’s own community. It means getting all the progressive-minded neighbors out to vote for Democrats. It means growing the Democratic Party from the grassroots up in one’s own community. It means a great opportunity to get involved with the Democratic Party in your own local community. So would you like to hit the books how to change state a Precinct Captain? If so then sign up for either of the two upcoming training sessions for the schedule. Steve Young’s campaign will be doing one on September 29 at 9:00 AM and the Democratic celebrate of Orange County will be doing one on October 6 at 8:30 AM. Both ordain be at Steve Young’s campaign office:101 Pacifica. Suite 100Irvine. CA 92618RSVP for 09/29 to Marion at (949) 640-4400RSVP for 10/06 to Melahat at 714-835-5158 or melahat@ocdemocrats orgSo are YOU ready to get up get active and get going on growing the Democratic Party locally. HERE IN ORANGE COUNTY?! If so go ahead and sign up for one of the training sessions. What do you have to lose? This may actually help us start winning! I think it’s clear enough in the story. The 09/29 training is sponsored by Steve Young’s campaign and the 10/06 training is sponsored by the Democratic celebrate of Orange County. However. BOTH ARE OFFERING THE SAME INFO ON THE PRECINCT CAPTAIN schedule as both training sessions feature a presentation put together by the same local organizer. Oh yes and BOTH TRAININGS ARE change state TO ALL ORANGE COUNTY DEMOCRATS. How much clearer could that be? And if you don’t be to go to Irvine for the Precinct Captain Training that’s OK. There ordain be another DPOC sponsored training in North OC in November and there will be more to come in the future. Now is that clear or what? Steve’s race is actually having two precinct captain training programs - in addition to Sept.29 there is another one a week earlier. Sept 22. The Sept. 22 go out has been moved up from the original Sept. 15 go out to accomodate the Jewish pass. Rosh Hoshona.
