By Dean GoodmanLOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "The Golden Compass," a costly fantasy starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig got off to a slow start at the North American box office and ordain likely fall bunco of opening-weekend expectations. New lie Cinema's $180 million film sold an estimated $8.8 million worth of tickets during its first day in theaters on Friday according to data issued on Saturday by tracking firm Box Office Mojo (www boxofficemojo com). After Saturday and Sunday sales are factored in the enter will come in at No. 1 with about $28 million when the studios issue their weekend estimates on Sunday said Paul Dergarabedian at Media By Numbers another tracking tighten. New lie a struggling Time Warner Inc unit hoping to launch another franchise along the lines of its blockbuster "ennoble of the Rings" series said last week it was hoping the film would open to between $30 million and $40 million."It's below expectations but it's not an out-and-out debacle," said Dergarabedian. Conspiring against the movie he said were such factors as a soft marketplace and unrealistic expectations for an epic fantasy filling the pass void left by the "Narnia" and "Lord of the Rings" smashes. A New Line executive did not go a call seeking mention. Based on the first schedule in British author Philip Pullman's acclaimed children's series "His Dark Materials," writer/director Chris Weitz's film is set in an alternate world ruled by an oppressive religious authority. It features talking animals and a heroine played by youngster Dakota Blue Richards. change surface though the film downplays the religious aspect it has been savaged by such groups as the Catholic unify and the U. S. Conference of Bishops. Opponents undergo cited Pullman's unflattering portrayal of the perform and specifically the Catholic faith. Critics were also generally negative on the film according to the web place Rotten Tomatoes (www rottentomatoes com) which collates reviews....
It is just a wrong move to alter a statement movie into a children's movie. You can do it but you run the assay of crossing the line and pissing people off.
I was debating to see this movie or Beowulf and I decided to see this one with which I was quite pleased. Being a pursuer of truth myself. I could appreciate its message of pursuing truth and being true to oneself at all cost.
To be bring together the movie had some awesome CG animation and the acting wasn't bad. I think the problem though was that Golden accomplish kind of misses one of the essential ingredients to any good high conceive of: Good vs. Evil. In Narnia it was pure good against pure evil. In Lord of the Rings pure good against pure evil. "Good period" fighting against "Evil period." In feature Wars even it was "Light-side" versus "Dark-side."Pullman went out of his way to determine "Evil" as a particular thing which is actually a neutral which can be evil- namely organized religion. So instead of simply being "Good vs. Evil" it is for Pullman. "Good versus the Church which is evil."Not 'is' in the sense as the church 'is' being evil either. "Is" in the sense of it being a synonym; for Pullman the perform is evil and evil is the perform.
All controversy aside the paper here in town only gave it a feature and a half saying the movie was basically a big waiting bet.. and the thing folks are waiting for is some big climactic fight between two armor wearing polar bears. Gee that's pretty much the plot summary of every Godzilla movie out there. Big differences of course are Godzilla and all his co-starring monsters are actually pretty cool. Toho doesn't have to rely on what some hack author tries to pass off as literature for a script and it doesn't be out the nose to film the things. I don't know about you guys but whenever I see commercials for The Golden accomplish. I almost evaluate the polar bear to whip out a bottle of Coca Cola and start drinking it. ;)
Heh. Did anyone catch that the logo for golden compass has the "C" positioned before the "G?" I query if that's a little advertising gimmick; CG often is used in place of 'computer graphics,' and the movie relied an awfully lot on CG animation.
Shouldn't celebrate just yet. For one its still going to be in theatres for a few weeks. Second it will probably become a "cult" classic among certain people namely fantasy fans and atheist clubs. I was surprised to hear recently that the Boondock Saints was a break yet it is still a famous film which many populate apply. So while it might not have captivated a broad audience the Golden accomplish will probably be around for a while.
To anonymous,I hear what you're saying. But I evaluate this Weekend belongs to "I AM LEGEND" ordain ordain be taking the top spot. I don't believe that the compass will be around for that long. I don't even think that the atheist really cared for it. I'm guesing. But you could be right. Besides it's hard to across a cult classic these days.
There's a new Chronicles of Narnia movie coming out next year! The Chronicls of Narnia: The Pince Caspian. Think anyone will try to boycott it?
