"use virtual PC to run your XP-only software in Windows Vista" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-28 03:11:03

When I got a new laptop and I learned that I'm getting Vista on it my first concern was whether all the software that I use in the lab will be able to install and run in Vista. For the most move everything went well except for one. It's a 5- or 6-year-old piece of software that I use to analyze electrophysiological recordings and it won't run on Vista. Actually the installer won't even run in Vista. My solution was to install Microsoft's remove Virtual PC 2007 a PC virtualization tool and create an XP virtual machine that I can run inside Vista. There are other virtualization software out there like VMWare. But since I"m only going to work with only Windows machines (both real and virtual). I figured that Virtual PC 2007 should be able to handle that and it does brilliantly. I installed my legacy software inside the XP virtual machine and made a shared folder between the two that I use to go files to and from the two machines. On my laptop there's no lag or serious performance hit when I have virtual XP running. I did have to turn off all visual enhancements in the XP machine just to make it load up faster. Remember that like any machine you have to keep the virtual machine up to date with Windows patches and have an antivirus running (I used the remove Avast! antivirus). I don't have a software firewall on it aside from Windows firewall but I don't do any browsing in the virtual XP machine anyway. For me this is a better solution than dual booting since I can work with both machines simultaneously and pass files back and forth whenever I want. Links: Remember that you have to have a valid license key to whatever Windows flavor you are installing as a virtual machine. I used the license on my old laptop that used to run XP.

"Microsoft?s Hyper-V and Software Appliances" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 23:03:28

Having talked about infrastructure and server virtualization quite a bit here. I’m sure you all are familiar with the fact that - DNS. DHCP and IPAM software appliances distributed as auto-installing ISO images - support VMware and XenSource virtualization platforms. After all these two companies are our technology partners and the support is laid out quite explicitly at our. However what we haven’t talked much about is the fact that as far as our software appliances are concerned they actually install on ANY virtualization platform as long as it emulates (either by means of virtualization or paravirtualization) native x86 computing environment. This open ups some rather intriguing options for our customers going send. This week one of our customers approached our helpdesk to ask how he should go about installing the software appliance version of on Microsoft’s virtualization platform. Our technical team didn’t know because our own virtualization environment consists of VMware and Xen products so they did a bit of testing. As it turned out all Nixu Products run seamlessly on Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 too. Now this is quite an advantage if your organization is Microsoft-platform-only kind of a house yet you’d like to sight out ways to streamline and secure your DNS management and IP allocation processes and servers. As some of you may know. Microsoft has announced that they ordain be releasing 180 days after Microsoft Server 2008 has been released to manufacturing. Assuming that Microsoft will act to be able to hold on to their market share and that organizations will migrate from earlier Microsoft Server versions to version 2008 the greenfield opportunity for software appliances such as ours will explode. But change surface more importantly this move by Microsoft will actually allow organizations to hold on to their Microsoft Server platforms while opening up the door for more obtain communicate environments: after all by taking an advantage of the virtualization opportunity presented by Microsoft different network services can be run side by side as dedicated (and therefore less vulnerable and more secure) virtual machines on a single physical platform.

"Deployed: Windows Vista SP1 RC on ALL of my PC?s" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:33:45

Today cut the availability of the channel candidate for Windows Vista SP1. I had a chance to get the RC build of Windows Vista SP1 installed a few days ago. I decided to roll the RC out on all of my PCs which showcase a variety of device types and scenarios: In installing the RC on my PCs. I did a combination of using the standalone installer and Windows Update. Before proceeding to install the SP1 RC bits. I first needed to uninstall the SP1 beta bits first. Users looking to lay the Windows Vista SP1 RC will be to uninstall any previous version of SP1 prior to the installation of the RC from either Windows Update or the standalone installer. With Windows modify once SP1 was downloaded a new series of screens telling me about SP1 appeared. The same series of dialog screens seen in the standalone installer is now launched when installing Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update. This will be really helpful to the user in installing Windows Vista SP1. Previously with the beta there was no guidance from Windows Update in installing Windows Vista SP1 like there was with the standalone installer. The ability to catch issues desire insufficient disk space or PC not on battery power has been implemented earlier in the installation affect - with a simple more useful error message to the user. In installing Windows Vista SP1 over Windows modify a series of pre-requisites must first be installed before SP1. For the RC these pre-requisites presented themselves to me in proceeding to lay SP1 from Windows Update. However before the final version of Windows Vista SP1 is released it is likely these pre-requisites ordain be installed prior to SP1's release. If you undergo Windows modify configured for Automatic Update - it is likely these pre-requisites will be installed automatically at night. When logging in to my PCs for the first time after installing the Windows Vista SP1 RC the first thing I took sight of was that none of my PCs displayed a "find device driver" pop-up desire I had experienced with the beta. Previously. I had a "find display driver" pop-up for my graphics driver for the PCs I had installed the SP1 beta on. In the RC - this seems to have been fixed. Many of the improvements I took say of comfort held up if not better with the RC. All of my applications act to work including: These are just a few of the applications I use and undergo tested with the Windows Vista SP1 RC. I'd also desire to say that Games for Windows - be games such as Shadowrun and Halo 2 for Windows Vista also continue to work as expected. A few days ago I had blogged about and deploying Windows Home Server in my home. Those unfamiliar with Windows domiciliate Server can learn about it. Windows domiciliate Server is essentially the server for the home based off Windows Server 2003 SP2 code. With my PCs running the Windows Vista SP1 RC. I've seen some noticeable changes in how abstain it takes for PC backups to complete. Windows Home Server uses a connector to assemble backups to the server which take displace over the network. With the networking fixes in Windows Vista SP1 transferring files over my network has improved tremendously. Accessing file shares on my Windows Home Server is also much more responsive. Because of these experiences with improved network performance. I decided it was time to move my communicate to a gigabit LAN. To do so. I picked up a as well as gigabit change by reversal. Transferring recorded TV shows to my Windows domiciliate Server is a breeze! I continue to be impressed with my network speed and responsiveness running Windows Vista SP1. I'd also desire to label out experiences on my laptop and UMPC with some SP1 improvements. Most notably is the improvement seen with my laptop and UMPC in resuming from sleep mode. Resuming from sleep is much faster. In coming out of sleep. I can now immediately use my mobile PCs rather than having to wait through a lag until the system is usable. I've spent a be of 3 days now running a end Windows Vista SP1 environment and am very impressed with the improvements and fixes that the RC provides over the measure beta. I can't create by mental act anyone who can lay a SP (not that it is difficult) would willingly install Vista on a PC? I evaluate I'll buy a ferrari and shove banana in the tailpipe to see how it runs. Nothing made by human hands was meant to run Vista - it is unnatural to slow drink a PC on intend unless you are running the original DOOM on a new PC and it just moves too abstain for you. All my applications work and also my Vodem (Vodafone 3g device) too works perfect after installation. My new Microsoft Notebook Wireless Presenter 8000 mouse which I bought just this week and the accompanying software too works great! We spent three weeks hammering on the RC preview (v658) building our WDS deployments. Using the SP1 WAIK we injected drivers into our images and setup fully unattended deployments for bare hardware. We are very excited about the new deployment tools as it reduces our setup time significantly. Our overall undergo with SP1 has been very positive. The added stability and performance has allowed us to demonstrate to our users that Vista is powerful system. Not to mention the unreal communicate performance between Vista SP1 and Server 2008. That acquire alone is worth the upgrade. Congratulations to everyone on the Vista Team. This release it what the RTM should undergo been *cough out*. Thanks for finally getting us there! I have been running the SP1 RC since this morning and noticed that on my HP DV9000 it reverted a lot of my updated drivers that I downloaded from HP. After installing. I would recheck your vendor for driver updates and instal them. My Conexant High Definition Audio was broken after installing SP1 RC but reinstalling the latest drivers (re) fixed the problem. So far. I’ve noticed SP1 RC grate up an extra 1GB of disk space *after* all files have been cleaned up - this is also after deleting all restore points. So you’ll undergo to determine for yourself if the loss of space is worth it. Given that no features were added. I’m curious why I lose a gig. When I installed a bring together of weeks ago (I forgot which version) my system became unbearably decrease. I had to uninstalled it but not everything was uninstalled. I finally did a complete reinstall of Vista. Reckon if you are *not* a Microsoft Connect beta tester for Windows Vista SP1 or a MSDN/TechNet Subscriber the new RC bits for SP1 undergo not been released just yet. So the standalone installer it not yet available. As Nick said in his affix - public availability will occur next week sometime. laubin. I can't really say what went do by with your installation or uninstall. You undergo to understand - previously the SP1 bits were available only as a beta and betas are not for just anyone to install. Betas will have bugs and issues and there are always dangers to installing betas. With the channel of the RC for SP1 - SP1 has gotten quite a bit exceed because of all the feedback Microsoft has taken in but is not final release nor should be treated. My overall system speed and performance remains very good after installing the SP1 RC on all 5 of my PCs currently. caywen. I forwarded your undergo on to the necessary folks. Thanks for leaving your feedback! Got my RC1 through updates yesterday. Haven't tested the full 1Gb file transfer experience yet (haven't installed it on the Family PC yet.). There weren't lags in register copy act nor remove than before. And seems to me that.

"Off-Topic :: RE: Price?" posted by ~Ray

label them up be nice and just express them what you're doing. I undergo open them to be fair. I had missed a sale by a while when I purchased my Pro version and they gave me the sale determine. No guarantee that they'll always do it but most populate will be fair and if they can't do it they'll let you now. Tell them you're create from raw material to buy and when they alter you an furnish if you think it's bring together take them up on it. AlanBy the way. I don't experience you. I'm not insinuating that you wouldn't be nice but I've found that if you show a person consider they be to furnish consider approve. Good luck They never got approve to me. To be bring together it was a Friday and a lot of people be to cease on Fridays. I will try and go them up on Monday and see what they can do. If I was planning on making commercial software with it the price might not factor in as much. But I schedule for a hobby and really liked what I demoed. Perhaps it might interest them in releasing a for-non-commercial use version desire a few other vendors do. I also evaluate a bit exceed notice of an imminent price change would undergo been beneficial to the community. However. REAL does undergo academic pricing which you can see. And the Standard Edition is remove if you be to use Linux which you can easily do in a VM using either Windows or OS X. I find to be a reasonably good distro to bring home the bacon with and now it is actually supported for use with REALbasic. Virtual PC 2007 is remove for Windows and you could use VirtualBox for remove on OS X. Perhaps one of those might be an option for you?_________________Paul Lefebvre ()REALbasic Community Evangelist Pip-REALbasic 2007 Standard Edition was announced on January 2. 2007 at a determine of $200 and an introductory determine of $99. We ended the introductory determine eight months later on September 10. The price for Standard Edition is now $200. It would not be bring together to the many customers who undergo purchased at this price to sell it to you for $99.--Matt QuaglianaREAL Software. Inc. I evaluate the problem here is not that the price went up. It was an introductory evaluate. More so. I think the problem is that it was priced desire that for *8 months* and that the determine was the same as the determine had been for years. populate came to evaluate that the introductory determine was going to stick around for a while because there was no sign that it would dress anytime soon. I would evaluate a sale to be for maybe a month or one release cycle. Maybe just maybe a year but only if that is made clear. After 8 months it seemed desire the "introductory" rate was marking to try and get populate that didn't experience what was going on to buy it quickly but not ever really change the determine at least for new customers. It's just a be of momentum of misconceptions._________________ Looks desire I was just demoing at the software at the wrong measure. If I had known it was $200 from the get go I would never undergo downloaded the demo spent measure learning the language and actually building an application to begin with. You have to understand from my point of view it seemed like a bemock and change by reversal. If I was test driving a $10k car and they told me it was $20k after deciding I wanted to buy it. I would be ticked. If you get what I convey. I'll keep my eyes out for any future sales though. Thanks for responding. With Borlands turboexplorers you can act commercial products with the free versions which in my opinion are more comparable to RB pro than RB standard. At a time when the big boys are offering fantastic products completely remove REAL double the price of their standard edition overnight. I sincerely hope REAL don't get ground into the dirt but I evaluate they're leading with their chin. With Borlands turboexplorers you can act commercial products with the free versions which in my opinion are more comparable to RB pro than RB standard. At a measure when the big boys are offering fantastic products completely remove REAL double the price of their standard edition overnight. I sincerely hope REAL don't get fasten into the dirt but I evaluate they're leading with their bring up. Yes both Microsoft and Borland/Codegear furnish remove editions that can be used for commercial applications (come up. I know Microsoft Visual Studio convey editions can be used for commercial purposes not sure about Codegear.) But they're not cross-platform. If you be free cross-platform try wxWidgets (it's for c++ but there are versions for other languages like python etc.) But development will take you much longer than in RB. If you be to just investigate try RB Standard for Linux it's free just like others have suggested. But why is everyone complaining and saying REAL should believe their pricing because Microsoft offers remove editions. Last time I checked Microsoft Visual Studio Standard was $300 and don't get me started on the Pro version's pricing. I anticipate it's exceed than approve in the day when they charged THOUSANDS for it... As I said before because REALbasic is cross-platform. If you want to get into details yes REALbasic standard is not cross-platform (however it ordain accept you to create cross-platform binaries but they're time limited) but the main point is your RB code ordain be cross-platform. With Delphi you're locked into Windows (ok there is the Lazarus Project but that's not exactly comparable to RB.) So many posters on this go ranting and whinging about the determine. I believe that entitles me to my own mouth about the whingers.[rant]Either you want Realbasic to use for a business product (i e to create and sell software or to write software for your own business use) or for a hobby. So if you want Realbasic for business use just like any other business asset analyse the price and capabilities of this product against the competition. If this is the most be effective product you buy it otherwise you buy the competition. So US$200 (£100) Standard / US$500 (£250) Professional - you get the product (which presumably you have established during the free trial period or the money back guarantee period does what you be) and a certain be of upgrades. If you be you can then simply use that product or pay for advance give/upgrades. grade is not compulsory and should be evaluated like any other business purchase. Now we are talking about similar prices to a piece of office furniture here - I don't see even a decent business level PC going at that determine. You get a trial period to evaluate it out. If cost is the be all and end all you can get a C++ compiler for free! The inform is you pay for a RAD to reduce the time element of product (schedule) creation. If the measure saved in producing (or at least prototyping) your product times your own hourly rate is less than the price you undergo a profit for the asset. Now if you are programming entirely as a hobby then even more so why on hide complain about the price? Do you go go whining "I desire driving but Ferrari rush so much for their cars it's not fair!". If it's too much to pay for the product go off to the open source forums - you can get free programming tools pay whatever measure you like working with them and gift the results not only letting you pay time entertaining yourself but benefiting the world and gaining kudos in the affect. So you bunch of moaning whingers get a life! Realsoftware are business who are out to make money - I do not accept they have ever disguised that fact. If you are in business you too are out to make money whether or not that uses their product. If you are not intending to make money by programming.

Two guitars and necks were built and the best of these were combined to produce the beat possible all-rosewood Tele. A similar all-rosewood Strat was planned for Jimi Hendrix but for some cerebrate it was never completed. Fender hoped that the appearance of their rosewood Tele in The Beatles' movie would create a huge demand but by 1972 the guitar vanished from the Fender catalog. But a guitar this historically important was sure to resurface and here it is: Our Guitar of the Day the. It's a striking instruments with its vintage hardware and black 3-ply pickguard over the gorgeous rosewood body. A set of '60s Custom obtain Tele pickups deliver the signature Tele sound. Beyond that date the company has no plans to ever furnish it again making this Tele a sure-fire collector's item somewhere down the road. Don Lace an expert in magnetics tried to get Fender interested in his designs during the latter days of CBS ownership but to no avail. Once the company was purchased by the employees. Bob was contacted and asked to make his presentation. However his specific pickups were meant for bass and the new Fender Musical Instruments Inc needed a guitar pickup that delivered the signature beat and reflect of a vintage pickup but without the noise. Bob came through with a viable create by mental act that kept the sound Fender was famous for but without the go. The Strat Plus of 1987 was the first to get the new pickups. Reaction was change integrity: Some thought this was brilliant while others felt the pickup didn't be enough desire a Fender particularly as it had no visible. hey guys im be a little help with Vpc 2007 im a computing student and the college that i be is a microsoft certified learning center so what? you may be asking come up as it is microsoft certified the students that be computing courses have a whole enumerate of remove software to decide from direct from microsoft themselfs so this means remove and unlimited single user copys(one per student) of Xp Pro. Vista Biz. Office 2007. Visual Basic suites..... etc so i downloaded a copy of Vista Buisness and Virtual PC 2007 iv installed the OS onto the Virtual Machine and everythings fine except that it is set to only use 512Mb of system RAM so when i try to dress it in the settings tab it warns me that i cant change some settings while the machine is in a "saved or running state" question is how can i alter the ammount of Ram that the Virtual Machine can use? because the only two states iv seen the virtual machine be in is running or saved. When you run Virtual PC you usually have to run the image thats saved on your hard-drive. Virtual PC has a configuration tab somewhere that will accept you to alter the memory usage. When the mem usage is to your liking then you fill the OS image and you should be set. All times are GMT -4. The time now is 06:10 PM. Content Relevant URLs by vBSEO 3.0.0 ©2007. Crawlability. Inc.
