"Defragging a virtualPC drive (file)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:40:22

That's a good challenge - something I've been meaning to benchmark. I guess it depends on whether or not you preallocate ALL of the virtual disk sectors up front when you act the Virtual forge. I be to NOT preallocate and so these ordain use a type of sparse register. When you defragment these "sparse" virtual disks (within the VM) you'll see that it defragments rather quickly compared to what I'd evaluate to see with a "real" plough. This can be explained by the fact that most "sparse" practices are implemented using at least one level of indirection typically a delay (directory) which contains entries for each sector (cluster chunk whatever) that is in actual use. Unused sectors don't have entries nor any backing store (the actual sectors). With non-sparse virtual disks. I would expect they drop the more expensive lookup go and use a much faster arithmetic balance/mapping write of system. So neglecting caching effects the overall performance observable within the VM should be better when compared to sparse disks. But I haven't tested it. With that in object then it stands to reason that defragmenting a non-sparse virtual disk within the VM should be equivalent to defragmenting a real plough. But defragmenting a sparse virtual plough within the VM should have little effect. However to alter the performance of the sparse virtual disks you should instead be defragmenting the entertain system that contains the virtual disk files (VHD/VMDK files). That's why when I act the virtual machines with sparse virtual disks. I specifically verify I undergo split the VHD/VMDK files into 2GB chunks - smaller files are more readily defragmented. Defragging the guest helps if you buy into the "sequential reading" concept of spatial-locality. This would be the same reason you would defrag the host. A file in a contigious layout "must be faster" to construe than the data scattered about the disk causing excessive disk seeks. That's true for a straight read like loading an app or a document but OS's do much more than that they update log files the registry etc etc. If you use adaptive defraggers it gets more interesting because these monitor your OS's read/create verbally patterns and layout files according to frequency of access. This means for example. Diskeeper in a guest optimizes the layout of the files within a VHD for how the guest is construe/writing them (not necessary sequential) and Diskeeper on the entertain is doing the same for the VHD and everything else being read/written on the host. The net is you should see marginal improvements optimizing the guest OS and according to some major improvements to defragging a VHD on the host.

"RE: Portable Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 :: Portable Freeware Submission" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:48:42

I have two MCPs (one with XP and one with Server 2003 and comfort unemployed :,( ) I might get MCSA or MCSE later on. I dont know yet since I got my Net+ over the summer and soon will be taking A+ as come up as CCNA I undergo recently switched over to Linux so I might change surface take Linux+ certification. Now approve to this topic. Qemu is decrease since it operates as a Ring3 app (hence it being truly portable) you can add kQemu (the kernel driver)(which would make it non-portable) which adds kernel aim emulation and alter it "faster". I would use VirtualBox any day over VirtualPC ) Waiting for it to be become portable the problem is that go0 driver :\ to run it in a portable manor you would need rights to install drivers and then remove them(I accept this is the same for VirtualPC) :\. For many other people on this forum VirtualPC is just fine "I have QEMU fully set up in a stripped-down optimised portable manner. It still does not compare to Virtual PC. QEMU is fine for virtualising Linux or BSD etc but for Windows XP the perfomance leaves a lot to be desired."hmmm. Does not compare in features or go? in features no VirtualPC move compare LOL in speed sure. VirtualPC will beat it for the most move (harder to tell if kQemu is added) and Finally it isn't the application's accuse if the OS is CPU intensive and coded in an inefficient manor. I undergo two MCPs (one with XP and one with Server 2003 and still unemployed :,( ) I might get MCSA or MCSE later on. I dont know yet since I got my Net+ over the summer and soon will be taking A+ as well as CCNA I am also currently unemployed in the IT handle lol. Just fresh out of educate though - graduated in August. MCP in XP Pro. 1 out of 3 tests down for my MCSA for Server 2003. The funny thing is the 3 tests for the MCSE are (at least in MY opinion) easier than the previous two certs.. all it covers is indepth Active Directory! What a blow. I'm struggling with ISA right now - what a b!atch of a test.. sheesh. Otherwise I'd have my MCSA already. But yeah approve on topic.. sorry for the seize. I'm gunna go see what kind of knowledge there is around here for Sandisk U3 drives and their coding/software options._________________-Zoom--------------------------------------------Certified MCP future MCSACurrently loading/using Sandisk 4GB U3 Hi Lococobra. A question about your VirtualPC package... In your instructions you mention installing VirtualPC then running it. I try to avoid installing whenever possible (hence using portable freeware ) Anyway in these situations I usually install it in wraithdu's "launched" Portable SandboxIE then copy the needed files out. But you mention actually running it while installed. What is the purpose of this? I tried running it within the sandbox which didn't work so come up. So I'm not sure if I accomplished whatever purpose you said to run it for! I think I managed to get the VMM sys if that was all... Also in your instructions you say "COPY %Program Files%\Microsoft Virtual PC -> \App" I assume you just mean the files in that folder not its various subfolders too? Referring back to Portable SandboxIE wraithdu included an exe called something like "crash clean-up tool" which as the name implies you can use to go back later and alter the registry etc in the event of the schedule crashing. Would you consider something like this for your VirtualPC launcher too or do you somehow avoid the be for one? Sorry for the rather basic questions. I do really like this idea and evaluate it shows much promise! Looking forward to "playing" with it when work slows down a bit. I'm not really used to forums (as you might guess by my not seeing the "subject" area when doing my previous post!) - What's the proper usage for a affix vs a PM? Should my prior affix have been a PM to Lococobra instead? Thanks for your patience all! Running it creates the file:%AppData%\Microsoft\Virtual PC\VPCKeyboard dllWhen I say "COPY %Program Files%\Microsoft Virtual PC -> \App" I mean that whole folder. About crash cleanup. I've considered writing a schedule to do that. It will probably be included in the next version that comes out.. just haven't gotten around to it yet. wish that helps! If you have any other questions gratify don't hesitate to ask

"Intel 21041 Based PCI Ethernet Adaptor, 100Mbps not recognized" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:34:09

Virtual w2k running in VPC v7.0.1 running in OS X v10.3.9 on PowerBookG4 (not Intel chips) recognizes the Mac's built-in Ethernet adaptor, but only at 10 Mbps not 100 Mbps. Is this a driver issue? Virtual w2knetwork adaptor config shows the following for the adaptor: Intel21041 Based PCI Ethernet Adaptor driver Microsoft v 5.5.0.0. I havefound a long list of driver downloads at Intel com (support) many ofwhich claim to give 100 Mbps but I have no idea which one to get. I undergo had no success searching the Microsoft com Virtual PC supportpage. Moreover. I can't even find out what adaptor is actually physicallyinstalled in the Mac PowerBook! The famous Mac user-friendliness (hidethe nuts and bolts) can be overdone; just a simple tech-spec wouldprobably nail this issue. Any ideas on how to get 100 Mbps out of the virtual w2k networkadaptor?.
